Board-Level DiagnosisHonest repair vs replace advice always
Before Assuming the Worst

Is It Really the Motherboard? Rule These Out First.

The most important thing we do before any motherboard diagnosis is rule out simpler, cheaper causes that produce identical symptoms. A laptop that won’t turn on is not automatically a motherboard fault — and the difference in repair cost is significant. Here are the checks we always perform first:

✅ Free Fix — Check First

Charger and Battery Test

A completely dead charger or a fully discharged, non-recoverable battery produces a laptop that shows zero response to the power button — identical to a dead motherboard. We test the charger output voltage with a multimeter and test the battery status independently. A failed charger costs from $39 to replace. This eliminates the most common “dead laptop” cause immediately.

✅ Free Fix — Check Second

RAM Seating Check

A laptop RAM stick that has come loose — from a drop, vibration, or simply working itself out over time — causes the laptop to either show a black screen on boot, produce beep codes, or refuse to POST at all. Reseating the RAM is a two-minute fix that costs nothing. On laptops with two RAM slots, a single stick failing can also cause boot failure. We check RAM before any board diagnosis.

✅ Free Fix — Check Third

CMOS Battery (Flat Internal Clock Battery)

The CMOS battery is a small coin cell on the motherboard that maintains BIOS settings and the system clock. When it discharges completely (usually after 5–7 years), some laptops refuse to boot or show BIOS errors on startup. Replacing the CMOS battery — which costs a few dollars — restores normal booting. This is a common cause of “motherboard fault” symptoms on older laptops.

⚠️ Check Before Board Work

Display and Cable vs Motherboard

A laptop that powers on (fan spins, keyboard lights up, drive activity light blinks) but shows a black screen may have a failed display, a failed display cable, or a failed graphics output — not a dead motherboard. Connecting an external monitor via HDMI takes 30 seconds and immediately tells us whether the graphics output on the board is working. If the external monitor shows a picture — the motherboard is fine and the problem is in the display circuit.

⚠️ Check Before Board Work

BIOS Corruption

A corrupted BIOS (the firmware chip that initialises all hardware at startup) causes symptoms indistinguishable from a motherboard fault — no POST, no display, no response. The BIOS chip can be reprogrammed using a flash programmer without replacing the motherboard. This is significantly cheaper than a board repair and restores a laptop that appears completely dead due to a BIOS update gone wrong or firmware corruption.

🔴 After All Above — Board Diagnosis

True Motherboard Fault

Only after eliminating all of the above do we conclude the fault is on the motherboard itself. True board faults include failed power delivery MOSFETs, blown protection fuses, failed voltage regulators, corroded traces from liquid damage, cracked BGA solder joints on the GPU or chipset, and failed individual components. We identify which specific component has failed before quoting any board-level repair.

We always check cheapest causes first. A charger test is free. A RAM reseat is free. A CMOS battery is $5. An external monitor test is free. We eliminate all of these before recommending any board-level diagnosis or repair — because we’d rather give you a $39 fix than an unnecessary $199 one.
Symptoms

Signs Your Laptop Has a Genuine Motherboard Problem

After the simpler causes are eliminated, these are the symptoms that point toward a true motherboard fault requiring board-level diagnosis:

💀

Completely dead — no lights, no fan, no response whatsoever

Press the power button and absolutely nothing happens. No LED, no fan spin, no drive activity, no sound. With charger, battery, and RAM eliminated as causes — the power delivery circuit on the motherboard has failed. A blown fuse, failed MOSFET, or dead power IC is the most common specific cause.

Powers on but completely black screen — no display at all

Fan spins, power LED lights, but screen stays black. External monitor test is critical here — if the external monitor shows the desktop, it’s a display fault not a motherboard fault. If external monitor is also black — the GPU output or display controller on the board has failed.

🔄

Random shutdowns or restarts with no warning

Laptop works normally then suddenly powers off or restarts without any Windows error. Once cooling is ruled out (clean heatsink, fresh thermal paste), random power-offs point to failing power delivery on the motherboard — a voltage regulator or capacitor that can no longer maintain stable power to the CPU.

💙

Repeated Blue Screens of Death (BSOD) with different error codes

BSODs with varying error codes — particularly errors referencing hardware failure (WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR, MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION) — after RAM and SSD have been tested and ruled out, suggest an intermittent hardware fault on the motherboard such as failing memory controller or unstable CPU power delivery.

🎮

Screen lines, distortion or crash under graphics load

Visual artefacts (horizontal lines, coloured dots, scrambled areas) appearing on screen, especially during gaming or video editing — or the laptop crashing specifically when the GPU is under load. These are classic signs of GPU chip failure or failed solder joints under the GPU BGA package on the motherboard.

🔌

Multiple ports failing simultaneously

USB ports, HDMI, SD card slot, and audio jack all stopping working at the same time. Individual port damage is a port issue — multiple simultaneous port failures point to the hub controller chip on the motherboard that manages them, or a break in the power supply to that section of the board.

💧

Erratic behaviour after liquid spill

Keyboard acting strangely, laptop won’t boot, or intermittent power loss after liquid entered the chassis. Liquid corrosion on the motherboard is time-sensitive — every hour the laptop sits with liquid on the board increases the damage. Come in immediately without attempting to power it on again.

🔋

Won’t charge despite good charger and good battery

Charger is confirmed working on another device, battery is confirmed good, but the laptop refuses to charge. The charging controller circuit on the motherboard — which manages power flow from the charger to the battery — has failed. This is a board-level component fault, not a charger or battery issue.

Same Thing — Different Name

Motherboard vs Logic Board — What’s the Difference?

If you’ve been told you have a “logic board fault” on a Mac or a “motherboard fault” on a Windows laptop — these terms describe exactly the same component. Understanding this prevents confusion when comparing repair quotes.

🍎 MacBook: “Logic Board”

Apple uses the term “logic board” for the main circuit board in all MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models. It performs the same role as a Windows laptop motherboard — connecting the CPU, RAM, storage, display, battery charging circuit, and all ports. MacBook logic board repairs are more complex than most Windows laptop motherboard repairs because Apple increasingly integrates components directly onto the board (soldered RAM and SSD on many models) and uses proprietary chips that require specialist knowledge to diagnose and repair.

💻 Windows Laptop: “Motherboard”

Windows laptops from Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer, and others use the term “motherboard” (sometimes “system board” or “main board”). On most Windows laptops, the RAM and SSD are separate modules in their own slots — meaning they can be removed and tested independently, making fault isolation easier. The motherboard contains the CPU (usually soldered), power delivery components, display output, USB controller, and charging circuit.

💡 Why This Matters for Your Repair Quote

MacBook logic board repairs are generally quoted higher than equivalent Windows motherboard repairs because of the proprietary components, soldered storage, and specialist tools required for Apple board diagnosis. Both are repairable — but the assessment approach differs. We diagnose both at our Brisbane stores and give you a clear quote before any work begins.

Six Fault Types

The Six Types of Laptop Motherboard Faults — and What Each Means for Repair

Not all motherboard faults are equal — the specific type determines whether repair is straightforward or complex, and what the likely cost range is.

Power Delivery Fault

No Power — Failed MOSFET, Fuse or Power IC

The most common true motherboard fault. The laptop is completely dead because a component in the power delivery circuit has failed: a blown protection fuse (very repairable, parts cost cents), a failed MOSFET (transistor managing power flow), or a dead power IC chip. Diagnosis involves checking the primary power rail voltage with a multimeter. Power delivery faults are often among the more repairable and cost-effective motherboard repairs.

Repair viability: ✅ Often repairable | Typical timeline: 2–5 days

GPU / Display Fault

No Display — GPU Chip or Display Controller Failure

The laptop powers on but produces no display output — and connecting an external monitor also shows nothing. The GPU chip or display controller on the motherboard has failed. On laptops with dedicated NVIDIA or AMD graphics, the GPU chip’s BGA solder joints can crack under heat stress (very common in gaming laptops). This category of fault requires specialist board-level work and is quoted individually after diagnosis.

Repair viability: ⚠️ Case by case | Honest assessment given

Instability / Capacitor Fault

Random Crashes — Failing Capacitors or Voltage Regulators

The laptop works but crashes, restarts, or produces BSODs intermittently. Failing capacitors — which can be visually identified by a bulging or leaking top — cause voltage instability that makes the system unreliable. Failed voltage regulators produce similar symptoms. Both are component-level replacements: the faulty capacitor or regulator is removed and replaced with a correct-spec component using precision soldering.

Repair viability: ✅ Often repairable | Visual inspection helps

Liquid Damage

Liquid Spill — Corrosion and Short Circuits

Liquid on the motherboard causes two types of damage: immediate short circuits (components damaged by current flowing where it shouldn’t) and progressive corrosion (which continues as long as liquid remains on the board). The most important action is bringing the laptop in immediately, powered off. We clean the board with isopropyl alcohol, assess which components have been affected, and advise on repair viability after inspection.

Repair viability: ⚠️ Depends on liquid type and time | Bring in immediately

USB / Port Controller Fault

Multiple Ports Dead — Hub Controller Failure

Multiple USB ports, HDMI, or audio jack failing simultaneously. The USB hub controller chip — which manages all USB ports from a single point on the board — can fail, taking all connected ports with it. This is distinct from a single port fault (which is usually physical damage to that port). A failed hub controller may be repairable or may require board-level component replacement depending on the chip involved.

Repair viability: ✅ Often repairable | Single chip fault

BIOS / Firmware Fault

Won’t Boot — Corrupted BIOS Chip

A failed or corrupted BIOS chip causes the laptop to appear completely dead — identical to a power delivery fault — because the board cannot initialise any hardware without valid firmware. BIOS corruption can result from a failed BIOS update, power loss during update, or the BIOS chip physically failing. Reprogramming the BIOS chip using a CH341A programmer restores the laptop without replacing the motherboard, at significantly lower cost than board replacement.

Repair viability: ✅ Usually repairable | Lower cost than board work

What Can Be Repaired on a Laptop Motherboard

Components Inside a Laptop Motherboard — What Fails and What It Costs

A motherboard contains dozens of individual components — some costing cents, some costing more. Understanding which component has failed determines the repair approach and cost. Here’s an honest breakdown:

Low Cost Component

Protection Fuse

Tiny fuse that protects the board from power surges. When blown, the laptop is completely dead. Fuses cost cents and the repair involves identifying the correct rating and soldering in the replacement. Diagnosis requires a multimeter to confirm the fuse has blown. One of the most cost-effective motherboard repairs.

Low Cost Component

Capacitor

Capacitors store and regulate voltage across the board. Failing or bulging capacitors cause instability, crashes, and power issues. They can be visually identified when they bulge or leak. Replacement requires precision soldering — the component itself costs cents but the skill required is significant.

Low Cost Component

CMOS Battery

Small coin cell that maintains BIOS settings and the real-time clock when the laptop is off. When flat (typically after 5–7 years), BIOS errors or failure to boot can result. Replacement costs a few dollars and is one of the most overlooked causes of “dead laptop” symptoms on older machines.

Mid-Range Component

MOSFET (Power Transistor)

MOSFETs control power switching across the board. A failed MOSFET in the main power path causes no-power symptoms. Replacement requires hot-air rework station and correct-spec component. More complex than a fuse replacement but still a targeted component-level repair significantly cheaper than board replacement.

Mid-Range Component

Power Management IC

The power management IC (PMIC) controls voltage regulation across multiple circuits. Failed PMICs cause no-power, instability, or charging failures. Replacement requires identifying the correct IC (board schematics help) and precision SMD soldering. A common fault in laptops exposed to power surges.

Mid-Range Component

BIOS Chip

The BIOS chip stores the firmware that initialises the entire laptop on power-on. Corruption or physical chip failure causes the laptop to appear completely dead. The chip can be reprogrammed in-place using a programmer, or removed and reprogrammed externally. Significantly cheaper than a board replacement and often misdiagnosed as a more serious fault.

Complex — Case by Case

GPU / Graphics Chip (BGA)

The GPU is a Ball Grid Array (BGA) chip — hundreds of tiny solder balls connect it to the board. Heat cycles crack these joints over time, causing display failures and GPU errors. Repair options: reflow (heat to re-melt joints — temporary fix, may fail again) or reball (remove chip, replace all solder balls — more permanent but complex). We give you an honest assessment of both options.

Complex — Case by Case

Chipset / Northbridge

The chipset manages communication between the CPU, RAM, and peripherals. Chipset failures cause severe instability, USB failures, or complete boot failure. Like the GPU, the chipset is a BGA chip. Diagnosis is complex and repair requires specialist equipment. We assess each case individually and advise honestly if board replacement is more cost-effective.

🚨 Liquid Damage — Act Immediately

Laptop Got Wet? What to Do Right Now — And Why Every Minute Counts

Liquid damage to a laptop motherboard is the most time-sensitive repair we handle. The actions you take in the first hour determine whether the laptop is repairable or not.

🚨 Do This Immediately If Your Laptop Gets Wet

Step 1 — Power off immediately. If it’s on, hold the power button until it shuts down. Do not let it continue running — current flowing through liquid causes significantly more damage than the liquid itself. If it’s already off, do not attempt to turn it on to “check if it still works.” Powering a wet laptop causes short circuits that destroy components that would otherwise survive.

Step 2 — Remove the charger. Disconnect the charger cable immediately. Having power connected while the board is wet accelerates corrosion dramatically.

Step 3 — Do not use a hairdryer. Heat accelerates corrosion. Blowing air moves liquid into other areas of the board. Place the laptop upside down on a flat surface to let gravity drain visible liquid.

Step 4 — Bring it to us immediately. Walk in to either our Underwood or Sunnybank Hills store as soon as possible. Every hour of delay allows corrosion to progress. A laptop brought in within a few hours of a spill has a dramatically higher chance of full recovery than one that sat overnight.

🧪 What We Do for Liquid Damage

Professional board cleaning: The laptop is disassembled and the motherboard cleaned with 99% isopropyl alcohol using precision brushes and ultrasonic methods where appropriate. This removes corrosive residue that would otherwise continue damaging the board after drying.

Component-level assessment: After cleaning, we inspect under magnification for corroded components, damaged traces, and short circuits. We identify which specific components were affected and whether they can be replaced.

Honest viability assessment: If the damage is extensive — particularly if it reached the CPU area or caused irreparable trace damage — we’ll tell you honestly that repair may not be cost-effective, rather than charge for work that won’t restore the laptop.

☕ Liquid Type Matters — Here’s Why

Water: Least damaging if treated immediately. Distilled water is non-conductive, but tap water contains minerals that cause corrosion. With fast action, water damage is often fully reversible.

Coffee, tea, juice: Sugar and dissolved solids make these far more damaging than water. The sticky residue remains conductive after drying and continues to cause problems. Requires thorough cleaning.

Alcohol (beer, wine, spirits): Highly corrosive — accelerates oxidation on board components more rapidly than other liquids. Brings it in immediately.

Honest GPU Repair Advice

Reflow vs Reball — The Honest Difference Every Customer Deserves to Know

If your laptop has a GPU fault and another repair shop has offered a “reflow” — here’s what that actually means, and why we believe every customer should understand this before paying for it.

🔥 What Reflow Is

Reflow involves applying controlled heat to the GPU chip while it’s still on the board — with the goal of melting and re-bonding the solder joints underneath the chip. It can restore a laptop that has GPU artefacts or no display — sometimes for months, sometimes longer. However, the underlying problem (fatigued solder joints) is not truly fixed by reflow — the joints are re-melted but the chip returns to the same position. The repeated heat cycles of normal GPU operation typically cause the same solder joint cracks to re-develop.

Reflow can be worthwhile for: Accessing data from a GPU-failed laptop. Extending the life of a laptop temporarily. When reball is not viable for the specific chip. As a diagnostic to confirm the fault is solder-joint related before investing in reball.

⚙️ What Reball Is

Reball involves fully removing the GPU chip from the board using a BGA rework station, cleaning all old solder balls off both the chip and the board pads, applying a new BGA solder stencil with fresh solder balls, and reflowing the chip back onto the board. Done correctly with quality lead-free solder balls, this addresses the root cause rather than temporarily re-bonding degraded joints. Reball is more expensive and technically demanding than reflow — and requires specialist equipment and skill — but delivers a more durable repair when the fault is solder joint failure.

⚠️ When Neither Reflow Nor Reball Helps

If the GPU chip itself has internally failed — not just the solder joints — no amount of reflow or reball will restore function. Internal chip failure is distinct from solder joint failure: the chip’s internal circuits have failed regardless of external connection quality. This is why accurate diagnosis before any repair work is essential. We assess the specific nature of the GPU fault during diagnosis and give you an honest recommendation on whether reflow, reball, or board replacement is the right path for your specific situation and laptop age.

The Honest Decision Guide

Repair the Motherboard or Buy a New Laptop? — An Honest Framework

This is the most important question after a motherboard diagnosis — and the honest answer depends on four specific factors. We walk through all of these with you before recommending any repair.

✅ Repair Usually Makes Sense When…

The fault is a specific, isolated component — fuse, capacitor, power IC, or BIOS chip
The repair cost is less than 40–50% of an equivalent replacement laptop
The laptop is less than 4–5 years old and the rest of the hardware is in good condition
The laptop has a high replacement cost — premium MacBook, business ThinkPad, or gaming laptop
The data on the laptop is important and the storage drive is intact
The liquid damage is limited and was treated quickly
Only one port or section of the board has failed — not the entire board

⚠️ Replacement May Be Better When…

⚠️The laptop is 6+ years old and the repair cost exceeds 50% of replacement value
⚠️The CPU or soldered RAM has failed — no replacement is possible without full board swap
⚠️Multiple board sections have failed simultaneously — suggesting systemic damage
⚠️Extensive liquid corrosion has reached the CPU area with multiple component failures
⚠️The board has been previously repaired and the fault has recurred
⚠️A replacement motherboard for that specific model is unavailable or costs nearly as much as a new laptop
⚠️The fault is in a BGA chip on an old laptop where repair cost approaches replacement cost
We give you the honest answer — even if it means not doing the repair. If after the free diagnosis we believe your money is better spent on a replacement than a repair, we’ll tell you that clearly. We’d rather give you advice that serves your long-term interests than take payment for a repair that isn’t the right call.
Brisbane-Specific Risk

Brisbane Storm Season and Laptop Motherboard Damage — What You Need to Know

Brisbane’s severe storm season (October to March) generates frequent lightning strikes and power surges that are among the most common causes of laptop motherboard damage we see — particularly in the months immediately following summer storms.

⚡ How Power Surges Damage Laptop Motherboards

A power surge — a brief spike in electrical voltage — passes through your power outlet, into your laptop charger, and onto the motherboard’s power delivery circuit. Protection components (fuses, MOSFETs, and varistors) are designed to absorb or block surges, but a large enough surge overwhelms them. The result: blown fuses, damaged power ICs, or in severe cases, damage to CPU or GPU chips. The laptop may work fine after the storm and then fail to turn on the next morning as a damaged component gives out entirely.

🛡️ The Simplest Protection — A Quality Surge Protector

A quality surge protector power board (not a standard powerstrip — surge protectors have rated joule protection) between your wall outlet and your laptop charger absorbs voltage spikes before they reach the laptop. During a storm, the most effective protection is to unplug the charger entirely — a laptop running on battery is completely isolated from power surges via the outlet. If you regularly use your laptop near a window in storm season, this habit alone prevents the most common surge-related motherboard damage we diagnose after Brisbane storms.

Every Laptop Motherboard Service We Offer in Brisbane

From free diagnosis to component-level repair — here’s the complete range at both our Brisbane stores:

Free Diagnosis

Full Motherboard Diagnosis — Simpler Causes First

We test the charger, battery, RAM, CMOS battery, and display cable before touching the board. Then we check for BIOS corruption before board-level diagnosis. Only once all simpler causes are eliminated do we proceed to power rail voltage testing and component-level inspection. This systematic approach ensures we don’t charge you for board work when a $5 CMOS battery would have fixed it. Always free.

Power Repair

Power Delivery Fault Repair — Fuse, MOSFET, Power IC

For laptops that are completely dead due to power delivery circuit failure — we identify the specific failed component (fuse, MOSFET, or power IC), source a correct-spec replacement, and perform precision SMD soldering to restore the power circuit. This is the most common true motherboard repair we perform, and often one of the more cost-effective board-level fixes available.

BIOS Repair

BIOS Chip Reprogramming

For laptops that appear completely dead due to BIOS corruption — failed update, firmware corruption, or physically failed BIOS chip — we reprogram the BIOS using a CH341A programmer and the correct firmware for your specific laptop model. This restores the laptop without any board-level component replacement and is significantly cheaper than most board repairs. Effective for laptops dead after a BIOS update attempt.

Liquid Damage

Liquid Damage Assessment and Board Cleaning

Professional isopropyl alcohol board cleaning, corrosion assessment under magnification, and component-level repair of damaged components. We assess which components have been affected, advise on repair viability and cost, and give you an honest recommendation before starting any paid component work. We don’t recommend reflow as a permanent fix without being clear about what it is.

How It Works

Our Laptop Motherboard Diagnosis & Repair Process — Step by Step

Methodical, honest, and no surprises. Motherboard repairs take longer than standard repairs — here’s exactly what to expect.

1

Walk In or WhatsApp First — No Appointment Needed

Come in to either our Underwood Marketplace or Sunnybank Hills Shopping Town store any day of the week. For liquid damage — come in as soon as possible, powered off. For other faults, describe the symptoms when you arrive or WhatsApp us in advance with your laptop model and what it’s doing. The more specific the symptom description, the faster we can identify the likely cause.

2

Free Initial Assessment — Simpler Causes Eliminated First

We test charger output, battery status, RAM seating, CMOS battery, display output on external monitor, and BIOS status before any board-level work begins. Many “motherboard faults” are resolved at this stage. If all simpler causes are eliminated, we proceed to board-level diagnosis — power rail testing, visual inspection, and component-level assessment. The initial assessment is always free.

3

Board-Level Diagnosis — Power Rails, Visual Inspection, Component Testing

We check the primary and secondary power rails with a multimeter, visually inspect the board under magnification for damaged components (bulging capacitors, burnt areas, corrosion), and test specific components in the fault-indicated area. For liquid damage boards, we clean first then assess. This stage typically takes 1–3 business days depending on complexity. We update you as we go.

4

Honest Quote — Repair Cost, Success Likelihood, and Replace Option

After diagnosis we give you a clear quote that includes: what specifically has failed, what the repair involves, the cost, the expected timeline, and our honest assessment of the likelihood of a full repair. For complex faults, we also tell you what a replacement laptop of equivalent spec would cost — so you can make a genuinely informed decision. No pressure, no obligation.

5

Repair Completed — Full System Test Before Handback

After the repair, we run the laptop through a full system test: boot, display output, all ports, battery charging, and a stress test to confirm stability under load. For liquid damage repairs, the stress test is particularly important to confirm all affected components are fully functional. You receive a clear description of what was repaired and any recommendations to prevent recurrence — including surge protector advice for Brisbane storm season.

Your Data Is Safe

What Happens to Your Data During a Motherboard Repair?

This is one of the first questions customers ask when they bring in a laptop with a suspected motherboard fault — and the answer is reassuring in most cases.

💾 Data Is on the SSD or Hard Drive — Not the Motherboard

Your files, photos, documents, and applications are stored on the SSD or hard drive — a separate component that is not part of the motherboard. In the vast majority of motherboard repairs, the storage drive remains in the laptop and is not touched. When the laptop is repaired and boots normally, your data is exactly as you left it. Motherboard repair does not typically involve any risk to data on the storage drive.

⚠️ The MacBook Exception — Soldered SSD

On newer MacBooks (particularly from 2017 onwards), the SSD is soldered directly to the logic board — not in a separate slot. If the logic board needs significant work, we discuss data backup options before starting. In some cases, if you need data recovered from a MacBook with a failed logic board, we can discuss data recovery options — which may involve accessing the storage chips directly. We advise on this clearly after diagnosis before any work begins.

🔒 Liquid Damage and Data — Act Fast

The SSD or hard drive can also be affected by liquid damage. However, because the drive is a separate component, even if the motherboard is too damaged to repair, it may be possible to remove the storage drive and recover your data by connecting it to another system. For liquid damage cases, we always check the drive separately from the motherboard assessment and advise on data recovery options if needed.

Got Questions?

Laptop Motherboard Repair Brisbane — FAQ

The questions we hear most often about motherboard faults. Not listed? WhatsApp us — we reply fast.

How do I know if my laptop has a motherboard fault?

The most serious motherboard symptoms are: completely dead (no response at all to power button with a known-working charger), powers on but no display on either the screen or an external monitor, random shutdowns or restarts with no pattern, repeated BSODs with varying hardware error codes, or erratic behaviour after a liquid spill.

However — always rule out simpler causes first. A completely dead battery that won’t take charge, a failed charger, a dislodged RAM stick, or a discharged CMOS battery all produce symptoms identical to a dead motherboard. Connect a different charger if you have one. If none of these simpler checks apply — come in for a free diagnosis at either of our Brisbane stores.

Is it worth repairing a laptop motherboard in Brisbane?

It depends on three things: the laptop’s age, the specific fault type, and the repair cost after diagnosis. As a general framework — if the repair cost is less than 40–50% of what a comparable replacement would cost, and the laptop is less than 5 years old with the rest of the hardware in good condition, repair usually makes sense.

Specific faults worth repairing: blown fuse (parts cost cents), failed power IC, BIOS corruption, and capacitor failure. Faults where replacement may be better: severe liquid corrosion with multiple failed components, BGA chip failure on an old laptop, or when replacement board cost approaches new laptop cost. After the free diagnosis, we give you honest cost comparison of both options.

What is the difference between a motherboard and a logic board?

They are the same component — the main circuit board that connects and powers everything in the laptop. “Motherboard” is the term used for Windows laptops from Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, and others. “Logic board” is Apple’s proprietary term for the same component in MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models.

The functional difference is that MacBook logic boards typically have the RAM and SSD soldered directly to the board (especially from 2017 onwards), making them more complex to diagnose and repair than most Windows motherboards where these are separate removable modules. We service both at our Brisbane stores.

Will my data be safe if my laptop motherboard is repaired?

In most cases, yes. Your data is stored on the SSD or hard drive — a separate component that is not part of the motherboard and is not touched during a motherboard repair. When the laptop is repaired and boots normally, your data is intact. Motherboard repair does not inherently risk data on the storage drive.

The exception is MacBooks with soldered SSDs (most models from 2017 onwards), where the SSD is physically on the logic board. For these, we discuss data options before starting work. For liquid damage cases, we check the drive separately and advise on data recovery if the drive has also been affected.

My laptop got wet — can the motherboard be repaired?

Often yes — if it’s brought in quickly. The most important steps: turn it off immediately, remove the charger, do not attempt to power it on again, and bring it to us as soon as possible. Every hour of delay allows corrosion to progress on the board.

Repairability depends on the liquid type (water is least damaging, sugary drinks and alcohol are more damaging), how much got in, and how quickly it’s treated. We clean the board with isopropyl alcohol, assess which components have been affected under magnification, and give you an honest repair viability assessment before any paid component work begins.

What is a GPU reflow and is it a permanent fix?

A GPU reflow involves applying controlled heat to the GPU chip while it’s still on the motherboard, with the goal of re-melting and re-bonding cracked solder joints under the chip. It can restore function — sometimes for months or years, sometimes more briefly. However, it does not address the root cause: the solder joints have fatigued due to heat cycling, and reflow re-melts them but doesn’t replace them. The same joints typically crack again over time.

Reball is more durable — it removes the GPU chip entirely, replaces all the solder balls with fresh material, and reinstalls it. This addresses the root cause rather than temporarily re-bonding degraded joints. We explain both options honestly and recommend based on your specific fault, laptop age, and budget. If the GPU chip itself has internally failed (not just the solder joints), neither reflow nor reball will help — we tell you this before you spend money on either.

How long does a laptop motherboard repair take in Brisbane?

Motherboard repairs typically take longer than standard laptop repairs. Simple power faults (fuse, BIOS reprogramming) can sometimes be completed in 1–2 business days. Component-level repairs (power IC, capacitors) typically take 2–5 business days. Liquid damage assessment and repair typically takes 2–4 business days. Complex BGA chip work (GPU reflow or reball) typically takes 3–7 business days.

We give you a realistic timeline estimate after the diagnosis and update you as the repair progresses. For urgent situations — such as an important work laptop — let us know when you come in and we’ll do our best to prioritise your repair.
