Is This Your Laptop?

Signs Your Laptop Has a Charging Problem That Needs Diagnosis

Charging problems come in many forms — some obvious, some subtle. Here are the most common signs we see at our Brisbane stores:

🚫

Plugged in but nothing happens — no light, no charge

Charger is plugged in but the charging indicator light doesn’t come on and the battery percentage stays the same or drops. Can be the charger, the port, the battery, or the charging circuit — needs systematic diagnosis to find the real cause.

🔁

Only charges when cable is held at a certain angle

You’ve discovered the exact position where it charges and you’re holding the cable in place while working. The charging port has worn or broken internal connections. This always gets worse — and the sooner it’s repaired, the simpler the fix.

📊

“Plugged in, not charging” in the taskbar (Windows)

Windows shows the battery icon with a plug symbol but the percentage doesn’t rise. Surprisingly often caused by a Battery Limit setting — but also by a faulty charger, degraded battery, or damaged charging circuit.

🌊

Charging cuts in and out — intermittent connection

Battery percentage goes up and down, or the charging light flickers. An intermittently failing port connection — often caused by worn solder joints or a bent pin inside the DC jack — is the usual cause. Getting worse over time.

🐌

Charges when off but not when in use

Laptop charges overnight when switched off but drains during use even while plugged in. The charger’s wattage is too low for the laptop’s power consumption — very common with USB-C laptops using underpowered chargers.

🔋

Stops charging at 80% or a fixed percentage

Most often intentional — modern laptops have battery limit/care modes that cap charging at 80% to extend battery life. Check battery settings first. If no limit is set and charging stalls, it’s a hardware issue.

💨

Port feels loose or wobbly

The charging connector doesn’t sit firmly in the port — there’s noticeable wobble or play. The DC jack housing has broken internally or the solder joints holding it have cracked. Don’t keep using it in this state — forcing the connection can damage the motherboard.

Charger gets unusually hot or stopped working after a storm

Charger is hot to the touch, the LED doesn’t light up, or the laptop stopped charging after Brisbane’s storm season. A power surge during a storm can destroy chargers and in some cases damage the laptop’s charging IC chip. Always use surge protection.

Tip: Always bring your charger when you come in. Testing the charger is the first step in any charging diagnosis. A faulty charger is the cause in approximately 40% of “laptop not charging” cases — and replacing the charger is far cheaper than a port repair.
Check This Before Coming In

Is It the Charger or the Laptop? — The Most Important Question First

Around 40% of “laptop not charging” cases we see turn out to be a faulty charger or cable — not a port or hardware problem at all. Before assuming the laptop needs a repair, do this simple test:

🔌 The Charger Test — Takes 2 Minutes

Borrow a charger that’s compatible with your laptop model (same connector type and similar wattage) and test your laptop with that charger. If the laptop charges normally with the borrowed charger — your original charger is faulty and just needs replacing. Replacement chargers start from around $40–$60 and solve the problem instantly without any hardware repair needed.

If the laptop still doesn’t charge with a known-good charger — the problem is in the laptop itself (port, battery, or charging circuit). That’s when bringing it to us for a free diagnosis makes sense.

⚡ Brisbane Storm Season — A Specific Local Risk

Brisbane’s afternoon storm season (roughly November to March) brings power surges that frequently damage laptop chargers and in some cases blow the charging IC chip on the laptop’s motherboard. If your laptop stopped charging right after a storm or power event, the charger is almost certainly damaged. Test with a borrowed charger first. If the charger tests fine but the laptop still won’t charge — the surge may have damaged the charging circuit inside the laptop, which needs professional diagnosis. A surge protector between your laptop and the wall prevents this entirely.

📱 USB-C Users — Wrong Wattage Is a Very Common Cause

If your laptop charges via USB-C, the charger wattage matters critically. A 45W phone charger will often run a 65W laptop — but the battery drains during use because the charger can’t supply enough power to run the laptop AND charge the battery simultaneously. The laptop appears to “not charge” during use but charges fine when off. Check the wattage printed on your original charger and ensure any USB-C charger you use meets or exceeds it. We see this regularly with UQ and QUT students using phone chargers on their laptops.

All Possible Causes

Every Reason a Laptop Won’t Charge — Explained Simply

Laptop charging failures have five categories of causes. Understanding which one you’re dealing with determines the fix — and the cost.

Charger Issue — Most Common

Faulty or Underpowered Charger

The charger itself has failed — internal components dead, cable frayed at the connection point, or adapter brick damaged by a surge. Also includes using an underpowered USB-C charger that can’t meet the laptop’s wattage requirements. Always test with a known-good charger before assuming the laptop needs a repair.

Port Damage

Damaged or Loose DC Jack / Charging Port

The charging connector inside the laptop has worn, broken solder joints, or physically shifted. Cable strain over years of plugging and unplugging — especially from laptop bags or awkward desk positions — gradually damages the port. Symptoms: needs wiggling to charge, port feels loose, charging is intermittent. Usually repairable without touching the motherboard.

Port Damage

Debris in the Charging Port

Lint, dust, and fine debris pack into USB-C and barrel ports over time — preventing the connector from seating fully. This is especially common in USB-C ports which have a small internal plastic tab that can also crack. A professional port clean can restore charging without any component replacement. We check for this during every diagnosis.

Battery Problem

Dead or Swollen Battery

A completely dead battery can cause “not charging” symptoms because the battery management system may not initialise charging. A swollen battery can also disrupt the charging circuit. The laptop may run on mains power but the battery won’t charge. Battery replacement typically resolves this — see our dedicated laptop battery replacement page.

Software / Settings

Battery Limit Mode or Driver Issue

Many modern laptops cap charging at 80% by default — Dell, Lenovo, ASUS, and HP all have battery care modes that intentionally stop charging at 80% to extend battery longevity. Windows battery driver corruption can also cause “plugged in, not charging”. These are software fixes — not hardware repairs — and are identified and resolved during our free diagnosis.

Motherboard Fault — Advanced

Charging IC Chip or Power Circuit Failure

The charging IC is the chip on the motherboard that manages all power delivery. When it fails — often from a power surge, liquid damage, or extended overloading — the laptop detects power but won’t charge regardless of charger or port condition. Signs: charger LED goes out when plugged in, no response to any charger, or no power lights at all. Requires specialist microsoldering assessment.

Know Your Port Type

DC Barrel Jack vs USB-C Charging Port — Why It Matters for the Repair

The type of charging port your laptop has significantly affects both the repair approach and the cost. Here’s what you need to know:

🔌 DC Barrel Jack

Traditional Round Charging Port

The cylindrical round charging connector found on most traditional Windows laptops. Only carries power — no data or video.

  • Found on: Dell Inspiron/Latitude, HP Pavilion/EliteBook, Lenovo ThinkPad/IdeaPad, ASUS VivoBook, Acer Aspire
  • Usually on a separate cable module — making replacement simpler
  • Some are soldered directly to the motherboard
  • Most common failure: loose or broken from cable strain
  • Typically the cheaper repair option — from $69
⚡ USB-C / Thunderbolt

Modern USB-C Charging Port

The small oval port on MacBooks and most modern slim Windows laptops. Carries power, data, and video through the same connection.

  • Found on: All MacBooks (2017+), Dell XPS, HP Spectre, Lenovo Yoga, Microsoft Surface
  • Usually surface-mounted directly to the motherboard
  • Requires specialist tools and microsoldering for replacement
  • Not all USB-C ports on a laptop support charging — check the port icon
  • More complex repair — from $89+

Try These First

Before You Come In — Six Quick Things to Try at Home

Many charging problems have surprisingly simple fixes. Try these in order before making the trip.

🔌

1. Test With a Different Charger

Borrow a compatible charger and test your laptop. If it charges normally with a different charger — your original is faulty. Replace the charger. If it still won’t charge — the problem is in the laptop. This is the single most important first step.

🔄

2. Power Cycle the Laptop

Shut down completely, unplug the charger, hold the power button for 30 seconds to discharge any residual power, then reconnect the charger and power on. A software or firmware glitch can sometimes prevent the charging system from initialising — a power cycle clears this.

🧹

3. Clean the Charging Port

Use a wooden toothpick or plastic tool to carefully remove any lint or debris from inside the port. For USB-C ports: a can of compressed air in short bursts works well. Never use metal tools — they can damage the internal pins. Test after cleaning.

⚙️

4. Check Battery Limit Settings

If charging stops at exactly 80% — check your laptop’s battery management software. Dell Power Manager, Lenovo Vantage, ASUS Battery Health Charging, or HP Battery Manager may have a charge limit enabled. Disable it and see if charging continues to 100%.

💻

5. Update Battery Drivers (Windows)

Open Device Manager → Batteries → right-click “Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery” → Uninstall device. Restart Windows — it reinstalls the driver automatically. This resolves “plugged in, not charging” caused by corrupted battery drivers without any hardware repair.

❄️

6. Let the Laptop Cool Down

Laptops have thermal protection that pauses charging when the internal temperature is too high. If you’ve been running intensive tasks, switch off, let it cool for 15–20 minutes on a hard flat surface, then try charging again. If charging resumes after cooling — overheating was the cause, not a hardware fault.

Tried all six and still not charging? Then it’s almost certainly a hardware fault — port, battery, or charging circuit. Come in to either of our Brisbane stores for a free diagnosis. Bring your charger with you.
How It Works

Our Laptop Charging Diagnosis & Repair Process — Step by Step

Methodical, transparent, no surprises. Here’s what happens when you bring your laptop to us with a charging problem.

1

Walk In — and Bring Your Charger

Come straight in to our Underwood Marketplace or Sunnybank Hills Shopping Town store any day of the week. Bring your charger and any USB-C cables you normally use with the laptop. Testing the charger alongside the laptop is the first step in every charging diagnosis — without it, we can’t rule out the simplest cause.

2

Free Charging Diagnosis — Charger, Port, Battery and Circuit All Tested

Our technician tests the charger with a multimeter to confirm correct voltage output, inspects the charging port for physical damage and debris, checks battery health and whether the battery management system is responding, and checks for software-level causes. If possible, we also test with a known-good charger to isolate the fault. This full assessment is always free.

3

Clear Explanation and Fixed Quote

After the diagnosis, we explain exactly what’s causing the charging failure in plain English and give you a fixed cost quote. We confirm whether the repair is straightforward (modular port replacement, same-day) or more complex (soldered USB-C, microsoldering required). You know the full cost before we begin any work.

4

Repair Completed — Charging Tested Thoroughly Before Handback

Once the repair is done, we test charging under load — not just connected, but actually charging to confirm the battery percentage rises consistently and the system remains stable. For port repairs, we also check that the connection is solid and there’s no movement in the repaired port. Most modular port repairs are completed same-day.

Got Questions?

Laptop Charging Repair Brisbane — Frequently Asked Questions

The questions we hear most often. Not listed? WhatsApp us — we reply fast.

Why is my laptop plugged in but not charging?

Start with the charger — test it on a different compatible laptop. If it charges another laptop, the charger is fine. If it doesn’t — the charger is faulty. About 40% of “not charging” cases are charger faults.

If the charger is fine, check your laptop’s battery limit settings (Dell Power Manager, Lenovo Vantage, ASUS Battery Health Charging). A charge limit at 80% is intentional and not a fault. Update Windows battery drivers via Device Manager if no limit is set. If nothing resolves it — bring the laptop in for a free diagnosis. The issue is likely the port, battery, or charging circuit.

Why does my laptop only charge when I wiggle the cable?

This is a failing DC jack — the internal pins or solder connections have weakened from repeated use and cable strain. What starts as needing a specific angle eventually becomes complete failure. This always gets worse, not better.

The good news: this is usually one of the simpler charging repairs. Many DC jacks are modular components on a separate cable, making replacement straightforward and same-day for popular models. The sooner it’s repaired, the simpler and cheaper the fix — waiting until it fails completely can allow the weakened connection to damage the motherboard port contacts.

My laptop charges when switched off but drains during use — why?

This is almost always a wattage mismatch between your charger and your laptop. Your laptop has a maximum power requirement (printed on your original charger in watts). When the laptop is running intensive tasks — particularly video, gaming, or development work — it consumes more power than the charger is supplying. The battery supplements the deficit during use but charges when consumption drops to zero during shutdown.

Check the wattage on your original charger (e.g., 65W, 100W) and confirm any replacement charger matches or exceeds it. This is very common with USB-C laptops being used with underpowered phone chargers. If you have the correct wattage charger and the problem persists, the port or charging circuit needs diagnosis.

Can a laptop charging port be repaired or does the whole motherboard need replacing?

In most cases, only the port needs replacing — not the motherboard. Many laptops have the DC charging jack on a separate module connected to the motherboard by a cable, making it a standalone replacement. Even ports that are soldered to the motherboard can usually be resoldered or replaced without replacing the entire board.

The exception is when a charging IC chip on the motherboard has failed — for example after a power surge. In that case, the repair is board-level microsoldering, which is more specialist work. We assess your specific model and tell you exactly what’s involved and the success likelihood before recommending this route.

My MacBook won’t charge — what could it be?

MacBook charging issues have several common causes. First try a different USB-C cable (not all USB-C cables support laptop-level power delivery — use a cable rated for 60W+ or 100W+). Also try a different USB-C port on the MacBook — some ports carry power, others don’t. Restart the MacBook and try again.

If the MacBook charges intermittently or not at all with a known-good cable and charger, the USB-C port has physical damage or debris inside it. A MacBook USB-C port that feels loose, shows signs of burn, or has visible debris needs professional assessment. Bring it in for a free diagnosis — we handle MacBook charging repairs at both our Brisbane stores.

Why did my laptop stop charging after a storm?

Power surges during Brisbane’s storm season are a very common cause of charging failures. A surge typically destroys the charger first — the charger’s LED will be off and it won’t power anything. Try a borrowed charger to confirm.

If a new charger doesn’t fix it, the surge may have damaged the charging IC chip inside the laptop — a component on the motherboard that manages all power delivery. This requires specialist diagnosis and microsoldering repair. To prevent this entirely in future: use a quality surge protector between your laptop and the wall during storm season.

How much does laptop charging port repair cost in Brisbane?

The diagnosis is always free. Software fixes (battery limit settings, driver reset) are free or from $39. Modular DC jack replacement starts from $69. Soldered DC jack and USB-C port repairs start from $89. MacBook USB-C charging repair starts from $99. Charging IC/motherboard-level faults are quoted after assessment.

We always confirm the exact cost after the free diagnosis before starting any work. No fix, no fee — if we can’t restore your laptop’s charging, you don’t pay for the repair attempt.
