Is This Your Laptop?

Signs Your Laptop Display Needs Professional Attention

Display problems come in many forms. Here are the most common signs we see at our Brisbane stores every day:

🕸️

Cracked, shattered or spider-webbed screen

Physical damage from a drop, lid pressure, or impact. Even a small crack will spread over time — heat, lid closing pressure, and normal flex all cause cracks to grow. A cracked screen always needs replacement, not repair.

🖤

Black ink-like spots spreading across the screen

Dark blotches that appear after an impact and gradually expand outward. This is liquid crystal leaking between the panel layers — the display is internally damaged. The spots will always grow. Screen replacement is required.

Screen flickering — constantly or when lid is moved

If flickering happens when you adjust the lid angle — the eDP video cable is the most likely cause. If it flickers regardless of lid position — the display panel or backlight is failing. Both are diagnosable and repairable.

Completely black screen — laptop appears to be running

Fans spin, keyboard lights up, sounds play — but the screen is black. Could be a backlight failure, disconnected eDP cable, failed display panel, or in some cases a GPU/software issue. The external monitor test (explained below) narrows it down instantly.

🔦

Screen very dim — image barely visible

You can faintly see the desktop image in bright light but the backlight has failed or is failing. The display panel itself is working but the LED backlight strips that illuminate it have died. Backlight repair or panel replacement restores full brightness.

📏

Vertical or horizontal lines across the display

Coloured or white lines running across or down the screen. Can be caused by a damaged display panel, a partially disconnected or damaged eDP cable, or in some cases a GPU issue. If lines appear on an external monitor too — it’s the GPU, not the screen.

🌈

Strange colours, distorted image or wrong resolution

Screen shows incorrect colours, everything looks washed out or tinted, or the resolution can’t be set correctly. Can be a corrupted display driver — try updating drivers first. If persists after driver update, the panel or eDP cable has failed.

🖱️

Touch screen not responding (on touch-enabled laptops)

2-in-1 or touchscreen laptop where the touch layer no longer responds. May be a software/driver issue — try reinstalling the touch driver first. If touch fails after a crack or drop, the digitiser layer needs replacement along with the display.

Not sure if it’s the screen or the graphics chip? Do the external monitor test first — see Section 3 below. It takes 2 minutes and tells you definitively whether the screen needs replacing or whether the issue is elsewhere.
Do This First — 2 Minutes

The External Monitor Test — How to Tell if It’s the Screen or the GPU

Before bringing your laptop in, do this simple test. It takes 2 minutes and tells you whether the problem is the laptop’s screen (repairable screen replacement) or the graphics chip/motherboard (a different and more complex repair).

  • 1

Connect your laptop to an external display — a TV, monitor, or external screen — via HDMI or USB-C. Most laptops have at least one of these outputs. If you’re using USB-C, make sure it’s a port that supports video output (not all do).

  • 2

Switch the external display to the correct input and press the keyboard shortcut to extend or mirror the display (usually Windows key + P on Windows, or F1–F12 function key with display icon on most laptops).

  • 3

Check the external display. If the external monitor shows a clear, normal image — your laptop’s internal screen is the problem, not the GPU. A screen replacement will fix it. Come in for a free assessment and we’ll confirm the specific fault and quote.

  • 4

If the external monitor also shows problems — lines, distortion, or nothing — the issue is likely the graphics chip or motherboard, not the screen. This is a different and more complex repair. Bring it in anyway — we’ll diagnose it properly and tell you honestly what’s involved.

💡 Can’t Do the External Monitor Test?

If your screen is too damaged to see anything at all — or you don’t have the right cable — don’t worry. Just bring it in. Our technicians have the equipment to perform the same diagnosis internally, and we’ll run through it as part of the free assessment. No external monitor needed on your end.

What’s Causing It

What’s Actually Wrong With Your Laptop Screen — Explained Simply

Display problems have several different underlying causes — and the right fix depends entirely on which one applies to your laptop.

Physical Damage

Cracked or Shattered Display Panel

Impact damage from a drop, lid pressure, or being shut on an object cracks the internal LCD/OLED panel. Unlike phone screens, laptop display panels can’t be partially repaired — the entire panel assembly needs replacement. The sooner it’s replaced, the better, as cracks spread and ink blotches grow with continued use.

Physical Damage

Internal LCD Damage (Ink Blotches)

Pressure damage without visible external cracking — a dropped bag, sitting on the laptop, or pressure applied to the closed lid — can damage the liquid crystal layer internally. Dark ink-like blotches appear and grow outward from the damage point. The panel needs replacement; the blotches will never shrink.

Cable Fault

Damaged or Loose eDP Video Cable

The eDP (embedded DisplayPort) cable is the thin ribbon cable that carries video signal from the motherboard to the display panel, routed through the laptop’s hinge. Years of opening and closing the lid flex this cable repeatedly — eventually causing fraying, breaks, or loose connections. Symptoms: flickering that changes with lid position, lines, or black screen. Often cheaper than a full panel replacement.

Backlight Failure

LED Backlight Failure

LCD screens require a backlight (LED strips or a CCFL tube on older models) to illuminate the image. When the backlight fails, you can faintly see the desktop with a torch in a dark room — the display is working but not illuminated. Backlight failure presents as a dim or completely dark screen even though the laptop is operating normally. May be the backlight component or the inverter board driving it.

Software / Driver

Corrupted Display Driver or Windows Issue

A corrupted or incompatible graphics driver can cause flickering, wrong colours, lines, or a black screen that appears to be a hardware fault. Try right-clicking Desktop → Display Settings to confirm resolution is correct. Update or roll back the display driver in Device Manager. If the issue resolves after a driver update — it was software. If not — it’s hardware.

GPU / Motherboard — Advanced

Graphics Chip or Motherboard Fault

If the external monitor test shows the same display problems — lines, distortion, or black — the issue is the GPU or motherboard, not the screen. This is a more complex repair than a screen replacement. Our free diagnosis will confirm this and give you an honest assessment of what the repair involves and whether it’s cost-effective for your specific device.

Know Your Screen Type

Laptop Display Types Explained — and Why It Matters for Your Repair

Not all laptop screens are the same. The type of display in your laptop affects which replacement panel is compatible, the image quality of the repair, and the cost. Here’s a plain-English guide:

LCD / TN

Standard LCD (TN Panel)

The most common and most affordable display type. Adequate colours, fast response time, but limited viewing angles — image quality shifts when viewed from the side. Most budget and mid-range Windows laptops.

📱 Found in: Budget Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer models

IPS

IPS Panel

Better colours and significantly wider viewing angles than TN. The most popular panel type in mid-to-high range laptops today. Noticeably better image quality than TN — worth requesting an IPS replacement when both options are available for your model.

📱 Found in: Mid-range Dell XPS, HP Spectre, Lenovo ThinkPad, ASUS ZenBook

OLED

OLED Display

Each pixel produces its own light — delivering perfect blacks, outstanding contrast, and vivid colours. More expensive to replace due to parts cost. Identifying an OLED laptop: settings often show “OLED” in display specs, and blacks appear truly black (not dark grey).

📱 Found in: Samsung Galaxy Book Pro, Dell XPS 15/17 OLED, MacBook Pro (M3+)

Touchscreen

Touch Display / 2-in-1

Touchscreen laptops have a digitiser layer over the display panel — similar to a phone screen. If the touch layer is cracked or damaged, both the display and the digitiser need to be replaced together. Touch replacements cost more than standard displays due to the additional layer.

📱 Found in: Microsoft Surface, Lenovo Yoga, HP Spectre x360, Dell Inspiron 2-in-1

High Refresh / Gaming

High Refresh Rate Displays (120Hz / 144Hz / 165Hz+)

Gaming laptops often have high refresh rate displays that deliver smoother motion. These panels must be matched exactly — installing a 60Hz panel in a 144Hz laptop results in a working screen that looks different to the original. We always source the correct replacement for your specific model.

📱 Found in: ASUS ROG, Acer Nitro/Predator, Lenovo Legion, MSI gaming range

MacBook Retina

MacBook Retina / Liquid Retina Display

MacBook screens are high-resolution Retina displays — some of the highest pixel density screens in any laptop. MacBook display assemblies include the screen, webcam, microphone, and antennas all in one unit, making them more complex and more expensive to replace than standard Windows laptop screens.

📱 Found in: All MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models

Not sure which panel type your laptop has? WhatsApp us your laptop model name and model number (usually on a sticker on the bottom). We’ll identify the exact panel type and give you an indicative replacement cost before you come in.
Brand-Specific Notes

Laptop Screen Repair — What’s Specific to Your Brand

Screen repair complexity varies by brand and model. Here’s what’s relevant for the most popular brands we service in Brisbane:

Apple MacBook

MacBook Air & Pro Screen Replacement

MacBook display assemblies include the Retina screen, webcam, microphone array, Wi-Fi antenna, and on some models the Face ID sensor — all as one integrated unit. This makes MacBook screen replacement more complex and more expensive than standard Windows laptop screens. Replacement requires careful disassembly and reassembly. WhatsApp us your MacBook model for a specific quote.

Dell

Dell Laptop Screen Replacement

Dell Inspiron, XPS, Latitude, and Vostro screens — a wide range from budget 15.6″ LCD to premium XPS OLED panels. Dell XPS models use thin-bezel designs with screens bonded close to the chassis, requiring careful handling during replacement. Dell XPS OLED screen replacements are premium parts. We stock common Dell screen sizes for same-day replacement of popular models.

HP

HP Laptop Screen Replacement

HP Pavilion, Spectre, EliteBook, ProBook, and Envy screen replacements — all handled at both our Brisbane stores. HP Spectre and Envy models often have touch-enabled IPS screens that require matching the touch layer during replacement. HP EliteBook business models use standard IPS panels that are generally cost-effective to replace.

Lenovo

Lenovo ThinkPad, IdeaPad & Yoga Screen Replacement

ThinkPad screens are known for their excellent IPS panels and straightforward replacement process. IdeaPad screens vary widely from budget LCD to IPS. Lenovo Yoga 2-in-1 models have touch screens that need the digitiser replaced alongside the display panel. Lenovo hinge failures are common — worth assessing the hinge during any screen repair on Yoga models.

ASUS

ASUS ZenBook, VivoBook & ROG Screen Replacement

ASUS ZenBook and VivoBook models use slim designs with very thin bezels — making screen replacement more delicate than older thick-bezel laptops. ROG gaming laptop screens include high-refresh-rate panels that must be matched exactly. We always source the correct panel specification for your specific ASUS model to ensure the replacement performs as expected.

Acer & Others

Acer, Microsoft Surface & Other Brands

Acer Aspire, Swift, and Nitro screen replacements are generally straightforward and cost-effective. Microsoft Surface screens are among the most complex laptop screen replacements — the Surface Pro uses a bonded display similar to a tablet, requiring specialist tools. We also service MSI, Samsung Galaxy Book, Toshiba, and Chromebooks. WhatsApp your model for availability.

Try These First

Before You Come In — Quick Things to Try at Home

Some display problems are software issues that can be resolved without any hardware repair. Try these before making the trip.

🖥️

1. Do the External Monitor Test

Connect to an external monitor via HDMI or USB-C. If the external works normally — it’s the laptop screen. If both show problems — it’s the GPU. This single test identifies which direction the repair needs to go, saving time and money.

🔄

2. Restart and Update Display Drivers

For flickering, wrong colours, or lines: restart first. Then open Device Manager → Display Adapters → right-click your GPU → Update Driver. A corrupted or outdated display driver causes a surprising number of apparent screen hardware faults. If symptoms disappear after a driver update — it was software.

💡

3. Test With a Torch (for Dim/Black Screen)

If the screen appears black but the laptop is running: shine a bright torch at the screen from very close in a dark room. If you can faintly see the desktop image — the backlight has failed but the display panel itself is intact. This tells us exactly which component needs attention.

📐

4. Wiggle the Lid Gently (for Flickering)

For a flickering screen: very gently move the lid to different angles while watching the display. If flickering changes or stops at certain lid positions — the eDP video cable is the cause. This is often cheaper to repair than a full panel replacement and is useful information for the diagnosis.

Physical damage (cracks, ink blotches)? Skip the home tests — there’s nothing to try. Come straight in for a free assessment and we’ll confirm the screen type needed and give you a fixed quote before any work begins.
How It Works

Our Laptop Screen Repair Process — Step by Step

Clear, transparent, and no surprises. Here’s what happens when you bring your laptop to us with a display problem.

1

Walk In or WhatsApp Your Model First — No Appointment Needed

Come straight in to our Underwood Marketplace or Sunnybank Hills Shopping Town store any day of the week. Want to check first? Why Us

Why Brisbane Customers Trust Mobile Connect With Their Laptop Screen Repairs

Screen replacement done wrong can introduce dead pixels, uneven backlighting, or touch layer issues. Here’s why we do it right.

🏆

Official Telstra Partner Since 2017

An established, authorised Brisbane business with trained technicians, quality parts, and real accountability. Two permanent walk-in stores on Brisbane’s south side — not a one-person operation with no fixed address.

🔍

We Diagnose First — Screen, Cable or GPU

We run the full external monitor test and eDP cable assessment before recommending a screen replacement. We won’t replace the screen if the real problem is the eDP cable — a cheaper fix. And we’ll tell you honestly if the problem is the GPU and a screen replacement won’t solve it.

🎯

Exact Panel Match — No Resolution Downgrades

We always source the correct replacement panel for your specific model — matching the resolution, panel type, refresh rate, and touch capability. We won’t fit a cheaper, lower-quality panel and call it a repair. If you had a 1080p IPS screen, you get a 1080p IPS replacement.

💬

Honest If It’s Not Worth Repairing

If your laptop is old enough that screen replacement costs approach the value of the device, we’ll tell you that clearly. We’d rather give you the right advice than take your money for a repair on a laptop that’s past its useful life. We also let you know if a MacBook screen repair cost suggests looking at Apple’s own programme.

🖥️

Dead Pixel Test Before Every Handback

Every screen replacement includes a full pixel test and backlight uniformity check before the laptop leaves our store. We don’t hand back a laptop with a screen issue we could have caught before you picked it up.

Got Questions?

Laptop Screen Repair Brisbane — Frequently Asked Questions

The questions we hear most often. Not listed? WhatsApp us — we reply fast.

Can a cracked laptop screen be repaired without replacing the whole laptop?

Yes — in virtually all cases. A cracked or damaged laptop screen is a replaceable component, completely separate from the laptop’s processor, memory, and storage. Screen replacement restores the display to normal function without affecting anything else in the laptop.

The cost of screen replacement is almost always a fraction of the cost of a new laptop — particularly for laptops under 5 years old in otherwise good working condition. Bring it in for a free assessment and we’ll quote you a fixed price before starting any work.

Why is my laptop screen flickering?

Start with this test: gently move the lid to different angles while watching the flicker. If the flickering changes or stops at certain positions — the eDP video cable (the ribbon cable running through the hinge) is the cause. This is often cheaper than a full screen replacement.

If flickering happens regardless of lid position — the display panel or backlight is failing. Also try updating the display driver in Device Manager first — a corrupted driver can cause flickering that’s mistaken for hardware failure. If the driver update doesn’t fix it, the hardware needs professional diagnosis.

My laptop screen is black but the laptop seems to be running — what’s wrong?

First, do the external monitor test: connect via HDMI or USB-C to a TV or monitor. If the external shows a normal image — the laptop screen or its connection is the fault, not the GPU. Then shine a bright torch at the screen in a dark room. If you can faintly see the desktop — the backlight has failed. If nothing is visible at all — the panel or eDP cable has failed.

If the external monitor also shows nothing — the issue is likely the graphics chip or motherboard, which is a different repair path. Either way, bring it in for a free diagnosis and we’ll confirm exactly what’s wrong before recommending anything.

There are black ink-like blotches spreading across my screen — what is this?

This is internal LCD damage — the liquid crystal fluid has leaked between the panel layers due to an impact. It commonly happens from: dropping the laptop, shutting the lid on something, or a heavy object pressing on the closed lid. The damage is not visible from the outside but shows as dark areas on the display that grow over time.

This type of damage is not repairable — the screen panel must be replaced. Continued use will cause the blotches to spread further, and continued pressure (from closing the lid) accelerates the damage. The sooner it’s replaced, the simpler the repair remains.

Is it safe to keep using a laptop with a cracked screen?

In the short term, limited use is possible if the crack is minor and glass isn’t shedding. However, a few risks increase over time: the crack will spread under normal use, ink-like blotches will develop around the crack, sharp glass edges are a cut risk, and the eDP cable running through the hinge can be damaged by the flex created around a cracked screen.

We recommend getting a cracked laptop screen assessed within one to two weeks of the damage. The longer you wait, the more the damage can spread — and what might have been a straightforward screen replacement can become a more complex repair if surrounding components are affected.

What is the difference between LCD, IPS, and OLED laptop screens?

LCD (TN panel) is the most basic display type — acceptable quality, affordable replacement cost, but poor viewing angles. IPS delivers better colours and wide viewing angles — the most common mid-range laptop panel today. OLED produces the best image quality with perfect blacks and vivid colours — premium laptops and some MacBook Pro models — but replacement parts are more expensive.

When we replace your screen, we always match the original panel type for your specific model. For some laptops, an upgrade to IPS from TN is available at modest additional cost — we’ll advise if this is an option for your device during the free diagnosis.

How long does laptop screen replacement take?

For common laptop models where we have the screen in stock — most Dell, HP, Lenovo, and ASUS models — replacement typically takes 1–2 hours and is completed the same day. For less common models where the screen needs to be ordered, we typically have it within 1–3 business days.

MacBook screen replacements take slightly longer due to the complexity of the assembly — typically 2–3 hours for same-day service on models where parts are available. WhatsApp your model beforehand and we’ll confirm both parts availability and timeframe before you come in.
