Why Do People Switch to Telstra?
The main reason people switch to Telstra is coverage. Telstra runs Australia’s largest mobile network, and the full network reaches parts of regional and remote Australia that others don’t.
That matters if you drive outside the cities, work on site, or travel through regional Queensland. If you mostly stay in Brisbane’s suburbs, the difference is smaller, and a cheaper plan may suit you better. We’ll tell you which side you’re on.
💡 A Quick Tip on Telstra’s Brands
Telstra owns Belong, and Boost uses Telstra’s full network. Telstra and Boost use the full network, while Belong uses the smaller wholesale network. That’s why we compare all three before recommending one.
Which Telstra-Family Option Should You Switch To?
Pick the one that fits how you live, not the most expensive.
Telstra
Full Telstra network, postpaid and prepaid plans, phones on monthly repayments, and Telstra’s own support. Prepaid kits start around $15 for 7 days, with 28-day plans at $44 (20GB) and $74 (80GB).
See Telstra plans →Boost Mobile
Prepaid on Telstra’s full network, with no lock-in. The $39 28-day plan is the best starting point for most people.
See Boost plans →Belong
Telstra’s budget SIM-only brand on the wholesale network, with no lock-in. Good for people who mostly stay in the city.
See Belong plans →NBN and Business
Switching your phone? Ask about moving your NBN or business services too, so everything is sorted in one visit.
NBN internet →Prepaid prices are standard prices after Telstra’s and Boost’s May 2026 changes, and Belong’s from its price changes page. Offers change, so ask us for today’s price. Concession card holders may also be eligible for a 10% discount on selected Telstra Upfront postpaid plans.
Not sure which one to switch to?
Tell us your current plan, how much data you use and where you travel. We’ll compare Telstra, Boost and Belong for you.
How Do You Switch to Telstra and Keep Your Number?
You switch by activating a Telstra SIM and choosing “Keep existing number”. Your number is then transferred, or ported, and your old service stops once the move is complete. You can keep using your old service until then.
Check your phone
Make sure it’s unlocked and supports Australian 4G or 5G.
Choose your plan
Telstra, Boost or Belong. We’ll help you compare.
Get your SIM
Pick up a SIM in store or order it.
Activate and port
Choose “Keep existing number” and verify your ID.
You’re switched
Your old service stops, and Telstra confirms by SMS or email.
🔴 Keep Your Old SIM in Until the Move Is Done
Don’t cancel your old service first, and keep your old SIM in your phone until your number has moved. If you cancel early, you can lose your number or be left without service. Porting cancels your old plan for you.
⚠️ The eSIM Catch Most Guides Miss
Telstra says eSIM isn’t yet available if you’re keeping your number from another provider. If you want to keep your number, choose a physical SIM. You can usually convert to eSIM afterwards. Ask us if you’re unsure.
What Should You Check Before You Switch?
Is your phone unlocked?
A phone locked to another carrier may reject a Telstra SIM. We can check it in store.
Do you owe on your phone?
Leaving mid-contract can mean remaining handset repayments. Ask your provider for the amount.
Do you have ID and account details?
Photo ID, plus your current provider’s account details if you’re keeping your number.
Will Telstra cover where you go?
Check your home, work and regular drives on Telstra’s coverage map.
Switching From Optus, Vodafone or Another Provider?
The process is the same whichever provider you’re leaving. You’ll need your phone number and your account details, and your old service will close automatically once the number has moved.
| You’re On | What to Check | Our Advice |
|---|---|---|
| Optus or Vodafone | Handset repayments, and coverage on your regular routes | Compare Telstra and Boost, since both use the full Telstra network |
| A budget brand (ALDI, Woolworths and others) | Your current price against what you actually use | Boost or Belong may be the easiest move |
| Belong or Boost | Whether you need a phone on a plan or Telstra support | Stay if you’re happy, or move up to Telstra for support and phones |
| An old phone plan with a handset | Remaining repayments and plan end date | Switch once you’re out of contract, or ask us what it would cost |
Is Switching to Telstra Actually Worth It?
✅ Switching Makes Sense If
- You drop out of coverage on drives, jobs or trips
- You want a new phone on a plan with Telstra support
- You travel or work in regional Queensland
- Your current plan is poor value for how you use your phone
⚠️ Think Twice If
- You’re happy with your coverage and your price
- You’re still paying off a handset on a contract
- You stay in Brisbane and want the lowest monthly cost
- You rarely use data, so a cheaper plan would do
💡 The Honest Take
Telstra generally costs more than other providers. If you’re happy where you are, we won’t talk you into switching. If your signal drops out or you want better support, the extra cost can be worth it, and Boost gives you the same network for less.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I keep my phone number when I switch to Telstra?
Yes. You can transfer, or port, your existing mobile number to Telstra. When you activate your new Telstra service you choose ‘Keep existing number’, and your old service stops working once the number has moved across.
Can I switch to Telstra with an eSIM and keep my number?
Not at the moment. Telstra says eSIM is not yet available for customers who want to keep their number when switching from another provider. If you want to keep your number, choose a physical SIM, or ask us and we will point you in the right direction.
Do I need to cancel my old provider before switching?
No, and you should not cancel first. When your number is ported to Telstra, your old service is closed for you. If you cancel early you could be left without a service, so wait until the move is finished. Check with your old provider about any remaining handset repayments.
Will my phone work with Telstra?
Most phones do, if they are unlocked and support Australian 4G or 5G. A phone locked to another carrier may reject a Telstra SIM. Bring your phone in and we can check it with you.
What do I need to switch to Telstra?
You need photo ID, such as a driver licence or passport, and your current provider’s account details if you are keeping your number. For a business service you also need your ABN or ACN.
Is Telstra more expensive than other providers?
Yes, usually. Telstra costs more than budget brands, including its own Belong and Boost brands. You are paying for Telstra’s full network, which matters most if you drive or travel outside the cities. If you mainly stay in Brisbane, Belong or Boost may be better value, and we will tell you honestly.
Should I choose Telstra, Belong or Boost?
It depends on your coverage needs, budget and whether you want a phone on a plan. Telstra offers phones on plans and its own support. Boost uses the same full network as Telstra for less, and Belong is cheaper again but uses the smaller wholesale network. We compare all three for you.
Can I switch to Telstra if I am still paying off a phone?
Yes, but you may still owe your old provider the remaining handset repayments. Ask your current provider for the amount before you switch, and tell us so we can include it when comparing the cost.
Can you help me switch my home internet or business services too?
Yes. We help with Telstra and Belong NBN, 5G home internet, and business mobile and internet plans. Tell us what you want to move and we will plan the order so nothing is left offline.
