Apple Silicon, T2 Chip or Intel — Why Your MacBook Generation Matters for Repair
MacBook repair is not one-size-fits-all. The generation of your MacBook determines what components are accessible, what data implications exist for logic board work, and which repair approaches are available. Here’s what you need to know:
M1, M2, M3, M4 — The Most Integrated MacBooks Ever Built
The current generation. All storage, memory, and processing are integrated into a single System on Chip (SoC). The SSD is soldered directly to the logic board and cryptographically paired to the Apple Silicon processor — meaning data cannot be accessed independently of the original board.
- ✅ Fastest, most efficient MacBooks ever made
- ✅ Fanless design in MacBook Air (M1/M2/M3)
- ⚠️ Logic board issues: data implications must be discussed first
- ⚠️ macOS Recovery: hold Power button (not Cmd+R)
- 📋 Identify: Apple menu → About This Mac → shows “Apple M1/M2/M3/M4”
Intel + T2 Security Chip — Separate But Linked
Intel-based MacBooks with an Apple T2 security chip handling the SSD encryption and secure boot. The SSD is also soldered to the board and encrypted via the T2 chip. Similar data implications to Apple Silicon — if the board fails, the T2 chip must function to access data.
- 📋 MacBook Air: 2018, 2019, 2020 Intel models
- 📋 MacBook Pro: 2018, 2019, 2020 (13″ and 15″/16″)
- ⚠️ SSD soldered, T2-encrypted — board replacement destroys data access
- ⚠️ macOS Recovery: Cmd+R at boot (Intel method)
- 📋 Identify: About This Mac → Intel Core processor listed
Intel Without T2 — More Accessible for Repair
Intel MacBooks from 2012 through early 2017 use more accessible storage and memory configurations. Some models have removable SSD modules (with proprietary Apple connectors). RAM may also be removable on some older MacBook Pro models. Logic board work has fewer data implications.
- ✅ Some models: SSD accessible via proprietary adapter
- ✅ Fewer data complications on board-level work
- ✅ Often cost-effective to repair — extends useful life significantly
- ⚠️ Parts availability may be limited for very old models
- 📋 Identify: About This Mac → Intel Core (i5, i7) listed
🔍 How to Find Your Exact MacBook Model
Click the Apple menu (top left) → About This Mac. The overview shows: Model name (MacBook Air / MacBook Pro), chip or processor (Apple M1/M2/M3/M4 or Intel Core), year, storage, and memory. If your MacBook won’t turn on — check the model number on the back of the unit (printed near the regulatory markings, starting with A followed by 4 digits e.g. A2337, A2442). WhatsApp us the model number and we’ll tell you immediately what repair options are available.
MacBook Faults We Diagnose and Repair in Brisbane
From the most common to the most complex — here’s the full range of MacBook problems we handle at both our Brisbane stores:
Cracked, black or damaged screen
Cracked display glass, black screen, lines, white spots, dim backlight or screen that works on external monitor but not internally. MacBook display replacement includes the full lid assembly. We check whether the issue is the screen panel, the display cable, or a logic board GPU fault before recommending replacement.
Battery draining fast, swollen or not charging
MacBook battery not lasting through a working day, showing “Service Recommended” in menu bar, or refusing to charge. A swollen battery is also a safety concern that should be addressed immediately. Important: a swollen battery directly beneath the trackpad is the most common cause of “trackpad not clicking” on MacBook Pros — battery replacement, not trackpad repair, is the fix.
Keyboard keys stuck, not responding or repeating
MacBook Pro 2016–2019 models used the notorious “Butterfly” keyboard mechanism — highly susceptible to dust and debris causing keys to stick, repeat, or stop registering. Later MacBooks use Scissor mechanism (more reliable). For very recent models, the keyboard is integrated into the top case. We assess whether individual key repair or full keyboard/top case replacement is required.
Liquid spill — coffee, water, drink
MacBook liquid damage is time-critical. Power off immediately and bring it in without attempting to turn it on again. The MacBook logic board is more compact than most Windows laptops — liquid reaches critical components faster. Important data consideration: MacBook SSD data is tied to the logic board encryption — board damage can mean data loss. We assess logic board and advise on data options before any repair.
MacBook won’t turn on — completely dead
No response to power button, no light on MagSafe or USB-C charging, no sound or fan activity. Could be a failed battery (try a different charger first), a power management IC fault on the logic board, or T2/Apple Silicon power delivery failure. We check the simplest causes first before logic board diagnosis.
USB-C / Thunderbolt ports not working
One or all USB-C ports not charging, not recognising devices, or not outputting to an external monitor. MacBook USB-C ports are on the logic board — a single port fault can be component-level repair; all ports failing simultaneously suggests a power rail or controller issue on the board.
Fan running constantly, overheating
MacBook fans at full speed constantly, laptop hot to touch, or system slowing down under any workload (thermal throttling). Usually caused by dust blocking the heatsink/fan assembly or degraded thermal paste on the CPU/GPU. The fanless MacBook Air (M1/M2/M3) can also thermal throttle — though sustained workloads rather than dust cause this.
macOS not booting, stuck on Apple logo, kernel panics
MacBook showing a progress bar that stops, stuck on the Apple logo, repeatedly kernel panicking, or entering a recovery loop. Usually a software issue — corrupted macOS, failed update, or storage corruption. We attempt software repair before assuming hardware failure. Time Machine backup condition affects recovery options.
Trackpad not clicking or behaving erratically
MacBook trackpad clicking too hard, not clicking at all, or registering phantom clicks. The #1 cause: swollen battery pressing up against the trackpad from below. Check if the laptop base is bulging — if so, it’s a battery issue, not a trackpad issue. Battery replacement typically restores normal trackpad function immediately.
WiFi dropping or not connecting
MacBook WiFi dropping regularly, very slow speeds compared to other devices, or “No hardware installed” error. On MacBook, the WiFi antenna wires run through the display hinge — hinge damage can sever antenna cables. The WiFi card is a separate module on Intel models and part of the SoC on Apple Silicon (less likely to fail independently).
Every MacBook Repair We Offer in Brisbane
From screen replacement to logic board diagnosis — here’s the complete range at both our Brisbane stores:
MacBook Screen Replacement
MacBook Air and MacBook Pro display assembly replacement for cracked screens, black screens, lines, backlight failure, and display damage from drops. MacBook screen replacement involves the full lid assembly including camera, microphone, and antennas. After replacement we perform True Tone calibration, ambient light sensor testing, and brightness verification across all levels.
External monitor test performed first to confirm display vs GPU fault.
MacBook Battery Replacement
MacBook battery replacement for all Air and Pro models — including swollen batteries (treat as urgent), batteries showing “Service Recommended”, and batteries that no longer hold charge through a working day. MacBook batteries are glued into the chassis — proper removal requires heat and precision tools. After replacement, battery is calibrated using pmset and charge cycle verified. Swollen battery resolution also restores normal trackpad click function.
Swollen battery = urgent. Check if laptop base is bulging.
MacBook Keyboard Repair
MacBook keyboard repair for stuck keys, non-responsive keys, and keys that repeat or double-register. MacBook Pro 2016–2019 Butterfly mechanism keyboards are the most commonly replaced — and the notoriously failure-prone design means individual key repair is often not durable. Scissor mechanism keyboards (2020 onwards) are more repairable. On newer MacBooks, the keyboard is integrated into the top case assembly.
Butterfly keyboard (2016–2019): may require top case replacement.
MacBook Liquid Damage Assessment & Repair
Emergency liquid damage assessment for MacBooks. Power off immediately and bring it in — do not attempt to turn it on again. We disassemble the MacBook, inspect the logic board for liquid entry and corrosion, perform IPA board cleaning of affected areas, and assess component damage. Critical data note: MacBook SSD encryption is tied to the logic board — we always discuss data implications before any board-level work. Time-sensitive: bring it in immediately.
Data implications discussed before any board work begins.
MacBook Logic Board Diagnosis & Repair
Logic board diagnosis for MacBooks that won’t turn on, crash unexpectedly, have thermal issues, or show power delivery faults. We work at component level where possible — identifying and replacing the specific failed component rather than replacing the entire logic board. This is significantly more cost-effective than Apple’s approach of replacing the entire board assembly. We always discuss data implications and backup status before any board-level work.
Component-level repair where possible vs whole board replacement.
macOS Reinstall, Update Repair & Software Issues
macOS that won’t boot, stuck on Apple logo, failed update, kernel panics, or a slow and unresponsive system. We attempt software repair — macOS reinstall via Recovery Mode, disk repair via Disk Utility, Time Machine restoration — before concluding hardware failure. For Apple Silicon: Recovery Mode is accessed by holding the power button. For Intel: Cmd+R at startup. Data backup recommended before any macOS reinstall.
Software repair before hardware assumption — always.
USB-C / Thunderbolt Port Repair
MacBook USB-C port diagnosis and repair for ports not charging, not recognising devices, or not outputting to external monitors. MacBook USB-C ports are on the logic board — we identify whether the fault is an individual port component, a charging controller IC, or a power rail issue. Some USB-C port faults are repairable at component level without full board replacement.
Free port assessment with any MacBook diagnosis.
MacBook Data Recovery & Backup Assistance
MacBook data recovery for models where the SSD or logic board has failed. For older Intel MacBooks with accessible SSDs — drive-level recovery. For T2 and Apple Silicon MacBooks — board-level repair to restore access to the encrypted, soldered NAND. For functioning MacBooks coming in for repair — we advise on Time Machine backup before any repair that carries data risk. Apple ID credentials are helpful to have available for Apple Silicon recovery scenarios.
Always discuss data backup status before board-level work.
MacBook Data and Logic Board Repair — What Every Owner Must Understand
This is the most important piece of information for anyone bringing a MacBook in for logic board work or liquid damage repair. Understanding it before the repair avoids the most painful outcome of a MacBook repair.
⚠️ MacBook SSD Data Is Tied to the Logic Board’s Encryption Chip
On all MacBooks from 2018 onwards — both T2 Intel models and all Apple Silicon M1/M2/M3/M4 models — the SSD storage is soldered directly to the logic board and encrypted by a chip that lives on that same board. On Intel T2 models, the T2 security chip holds the encryption keys. On Apple Silicon models, the encryption keys live inside the Apple Silicon SoC itself.
This means: if the logic board is replaced, data access is permanently lost. The new board has a different encryption chip — it cannot decrypt the data on the old soldered NAND chips, even if those NAND chips are physically intact. Apple’s own Genius Bar follows this same limitation. This is not a repair shop limitation — it is a fundamental design of Apple’s security architecture.
What this means for your repair: Before any logic board work on a 2018+ MacBook, we discuss your data backup status. If you have a recent Time Machine backup — proceed confidently. If you don’t have a backup and the Mac can still boot — back up via Time Machine before coming in. If the Mac won’t boot and you have critical data — tell us this immediately so we can assess recovery options before any repair work begins.
⏰ One Time Machine Backup Can Save Everything
Before bringing any MacBook in for logic board or liquid damage assessment: plug in an external drive → open Time Machine → back up now. This single action removes all data risk from the repair process. If the MacBook can boot at all — this is the most important thing to do before bringing it in. If it cannot boot — tell us before any work begins so we can discuss data recovery options first.
✅ Older Intel MacBooks (Pre-2018) — Better Data Position
MacBooks manufactured before 2018 use either removable SSD modules (with proprietary Apple connectors) or, on very old models, standard SATA drives. If the logic board on an older Intel MacBook fails, the storage can sometimes be removed and accessed from another compatible Mac. This makes older MacBook repairs significantly less data-risky than modern models. If your MacBook is from 2017 or earlier, the data situation is usually more manageable.
Apple Store vs Mobile Connect — An Honest Comparison for Brisbane MacBook Owners
Apple’s Genius Bar and AASP (Apple Authorised Service Provider) network offer certain guarantees — but also certain limitations. Here’s an honest, side-by-side view to help you decide what’s right for your situation.
🍎 When Apple Store or AASP Is the Better Choice
Under AppleCare+: If your MacBook is within AppleCare+ coverage, Apple repairs at reduced cost ($99–$149 AUD per incident for accidental damage). If you have AppleCare+ — use it. It’s already paid for and Apple’s official repair process maintains your warranty coverage.
Under standard 1-year warranty: Manufacturing defects are covered free. Apple has also run extended repair programmes for certain known defects (butterfly keyboard, 2018 MacBook Pro display issues). Check apple.com/au/support for active programmes for your model.
For very new MacBooks: Using a non-authorised repairer may affect your remaining warranty. If your MacBook is less than 12 months old and under warranty — Apple service is usually the right first call.
💡 When Mobile Connect Is the Better Choice
Out of warranty: Most Brisbane MacBook owners bringing in a Mac for repair have an out-of-warranty device. Apple’s out-of-warranty pricing is based on replacing entire assemblies — often quoting $800–$1,500+ for logic board faults that can be repaired at component level for a fraction of that cost.
Component-level logic board repair: Apple replaces entire logic boards. We diagnose to the specific component — a failed power management IC, a blown fuse, or a corroded capacitor — and replace only what failed. For a $600 Apple logic board quote, the actual fault might be a $20 component repair at a competent third-party shop.
Older MacBooks Apple won’t service: Apple has an “Obsolete” designation for products more than 7 years old — they stop servicing these officially. Many older but fully functional MacBooks are repairable at third-party shops for years after Apple stops supporting them.
Liquid damage: Apple’s liquid damage assessment almost universally results in a full board replacement quote. Component-level liquid damage repair — cleaning the board and replacing affected components — saves a significant amount of money and preserves your data access if the board can be kept intact.
MacBook-Specific Known Issues — and the Honest Fix for Each
Certain MacBook issues are so consistently seen that they have known, specific causes and known, specific fixes. Here’s what we see most frequently at our Brisbane stores:
⌨️ 2016–2019 MacBook Pro: Butterfly Keyboard Failures
The Butterfly keyboard mechanism used in MacBook Pro models from 2016 to 2019 (and MacBook Air 2018–2019) is the most commonly failed keyboard Apple has shipped. Individual keys stop registering, double-register, or stick. The mechanism is extraordinarily sensitive to even tiny dust particles — a single particle under a keycap can disable it. Apple ran an extended repair program for this keyboard, but this program has now ended. For affected models, repair typically means top case replacement (keyboard, battery, and trackpad are one assembly on these models). If you have a 2016–2019 MacBook Pro with keyboard issues — this is extremely common and very repairable.
🔋 2018–2020 MacBook Pro: Swollen Battery → Trackpad Problem
MacBook Pro 2018, 2019, and 2020 models frequently develop swollen battery cells. The battery sits directly beneath the trackpad, and as it swells, it physically lifts the Force Touch trackpad mechanism — preventing normal clicks and causing erratic trackpad behaviour. The fix is battery replacement, not trackpad repair. After battery replacement, the trackpad typically returns to perfect function immediately. A swollen battery also creates a visible convex bulge in the laptop’s aluminium base — check by placing it on a flat surface. A swollen battery is also a fire safety concern and should be replaced without delay.
🖥️ 2018 MacBook Pro: Display Flickering (Known GPU Issue)
Some 2018 MacBook Pro 15-inch models experienced display flickering, horizontal lines, and graphical glitches related to the AMD GPU and associated drivers. Apple ran a Repair Extension Program for this issue, which has ended. For affected models still experiencing this — diagnosis is needed to determine whether the current symptoms are software (driver) or hardware (GPU) in origin. External monitor test first confirms whether it’s display panel or GPU output.
🔌 MacBook Not Charging — Try This First
Before bringing a MacBook in for “won’t charge” — try an SMC reset. For Intel MacBooks: shut down, press and hold Shift+Control+Option+Power for 10 seconds, release all, then press Power. For Apple Silicon MacBooks: shut down and wait 30 seconds, then turn on normally (Apple Silicon resets the equivalent of SMC automatically during normal shutdown). Also try a different USB-C cable and a different port on the MacBook — MagSafe and USB-C port faults are sometimes port-specific. If all ports fail to charge with a known-working cable — bring it in for charging circuit diagnosis.
Spilled on Your MacBook? What to Do Right Now
MacBook liquid damage is more time-sensitive than almost any other repair. The steps you take in the next two minutes determine the outcome.
🚨 The Immediate Steps — Do This Now
1. Power off immediately. Hold the power button for 10 seconds without hesitation. Do not attempt a normal shutdown, do not save your work. Get it off now.
2. Close the lid and do not open it again. On MacBook, closing the lid helps prevent liquid from spreading further inside through the vents.
3. Do not turn it on again. Even when it appears dry. MacBook SSD data is tied to the logic board encryption — powering on a wet board can destroy components that would otherwise be repairable, and could cause data-irreversible board damage.
4. Do not put it in rice. Rice does nothing useful and can introduce particles into the MacBook’s ventilation system.
5. Bring it to us immediately. Walk in to Underwood or Sunnybank Hills — WhatsApp us on the way. The sooner we clean the logic board, the better the outcome.
Why Brisbane MacBook Users Come to Us
MacBook repairs in Brisbane reflect the city’s lifestyle — café workers, university students, creative professionals, and home office users. Here’s what we see most at our Brisbane stores:
☕ Café and Co-Working Spill Damage
Brisbane’s café culture — working from coffee shops across Fortitude Valley, South Bank, West End, and Logan — is one of the most common contexts for MacBook liquid damage we see. A knocked coffee or knocked water bottle in a café is the single most common liquid damage scenario. For Brisbane café workers: the most protective habit is keeping your MacBook charger plugged in and on the table rather than on the floor (so it can be quickly disconnected), and never placing drinks above keyboard level. If it happens — power off first, ask the barista for paper towels, and come straight in.
🎓 University Students — UQ, QUT, Griffith
MacBook Air is the dominant student laptop at Brisbane’s universities. The most common student MacBook repairs we see: screens cracked from being sat on or dropped from lap height; batteries that no longer last through a day of lectures (MacBook battery performance typically degrades measurably after 500–1,000 charge cycles, which is 1.5–3 years of student use); and keyboard issues on older models inherited from family members. If you’re a student near Logan or Sunnybank — our stores are very accessible from QUT, UQ South Bank, Griffith Logan, and TAFE Queensland campuses.
🎨 Creative Professionals — Graphic Designers, Video Editors, Photographers
Brisbane’s creative sector relies heavily on MacBook Pro — particularly for Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere, Logic Pro, and Lightroom. For creative professionals, display accuracy after screen replacement matters: we perform True Tone calibration after any MacBook display replacement to ensure colour accuracy. For logic board repairs on creative MacBooks — data protection is paramount, and we always discuss backup status before any board work.

MacBook Repair Brisbane — FAQ
The questions we hear most often. Not listed? WhatsApp us — we reply fast.
What MacBook models do you repair in Brisbane?
We repair all MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models — from older Intel models through to the latest Apple Silicon MacBooks including M1, M2, M3, and M4. This covers all screen sizes: MacBook Air (11″, 13″, 15″), MacBook Pro (13″, 14″, 15″, 16″). For very old models (pre-2012), parts availability may be limited — WhatsApp us your model to confirm before coming in.
Is MacBook repair cheaper at a third-party shop than Apple?
For out-of-warranty MacBooks — almost always yes. Apple’s pricing is based on replacing entire assemblies rather than individual components. A logic board fault that requires replacing a single $20 component may receive a $600–$1,200 logic board replacement quote from Apple. Third-party shops working at component level identify and replace only what failed.
Exception: if your MacBook is within AppleCare+ coverage — use it. AppleCare+ reduces repair costs to around $99–$149 per incident for accidental damage. For out-of-warranty MacBooks, third-party component-level repair is typically significantly more affordable.
Will my data be safe during MacBook repair?
For screen replacement and battery replacement — yes, data is completely safe. These repairs don’t involve the logic board or storage.
For logic board work on any MacBook from 2018 onwards (T2 Intel and all Apple Silicon) — the SSD is soldered to the board and encrypted by a chip on that board. If the board needs to be replaced, data access is permanently lost. We always discuss this before starting any board-level work. Back up via Time Machine before coming in if the Mac can still boot. If it can’t boot and you have critical data — tell us immediately so we can discuss recovery options first.
My MacBook trackpad isn’t clicking — is it broken?
The most common cause — particularly on MacBook Pro 2018–2020 models — is a swollen battery physically pushing up against the trackpad from below. Check whether the bottom of your MacBook is bulging or convex when placed on a flat surface. If so, the battery has swollen and needs immediate replacement. After battery replacement, the trackpad click typically returns to normal immediately. A swollen battery is also a safety concern that should be addressed without delay.
My MacBook has a butterfly keyboard that keeps failing — what are my options?
The Butterfly keyboard mechanism used in MacBook Pro 2016–2019 and MacBook Air 2018–2019 is a known problematic design. Apple ran an extended repair program that has now ended. For these models, repair typically means top case replacement — which includes the keyboard, battery, and trackpad as one assembly. The newer Scissor mechanism keyboard (2020 onwards) is significantly more reliable. Come in for a free assessment and we’ll confirm which repair applies to your model.
My MacBook has liquid damage — what should I do?
Act immediately: hold the power button for 10 seconds to force power off. Close the lid. Do not turn it on again. Do not put it in rice. Bring it to either of our Brisbane stores as soon as possible — WhatsApp us on the way. MacBook liquid damage is the most time-sensitive repair we handle because board corrosion progresses rapidly and affects data access on 2018+ models.
How do I know if I have an Apple Silicon or Intel MacBook?
Click the Apple menu → About This Mac. Under Chip or Processor: “Apple M1/M2/M3/M4” = Apple Silicon. “Intel Core i5/i7/i9” = Intel. If your Mac won’t turn on, check the model number on the bottom of the unit (e.g. A2337 = M1 MacBook Air). WhatsApp us the model number and we’ll tell you exactly which generation it is and what repair options are available.
