🚨 Do This Right Now

The Exact Steps to Take in the First Two Minutes After a Liquid Spill

Your actions in the next two minutes determine whether your laptop is recoverable. Follow these steps exactly — in this order.

1

✅ Power Off Immediately — Hold for 10 Seconds

Hold the power button for a full 10 seconds without releasing. Do not try to save your work. Do not do a proper Windows shutdown. Do not wait. The moment liquid contacts a powered circuit board, electricity takes unintended paths through the liquid — this causes rapid short circuits that destroy components that would otherwise have survived. Every second the laptop stays powered on with liquid inside increases the damage. Off immediately.

2

✅ Unplug the Charger and Remove All Accessories

Disconnect the charger cable, USB devices, and any external accessories immediately. A connected charger continues to push current onto the board even after shutdown on some laptop models. Remove the power source completely. If your laptop has a removable battery (older models) and you have the right screwdriver handy — removing it eliminates the remaining current source. Do not force this on modern laptops where the battery is sealed.

3

✅ Tilt to Drain — Keyboard or Vent Side Down

If the spill entered through the keyboard, tilt the laptop so the keyboard faces downward — like an open book placed face-down. Gravity helps drain visible liquid away from the board rather than deeper into it. Hold it steady in this position rather than shaking or moving it repeatedly, which spreads liquid to areas it hasn’t reached yet.

4

✅ Blot Visible Liquid Gently — Then Come Straight In

Use a dry cloth or paper towel to blot (not wipe) any visible liquid from the surface — keyboard, screen, ports. Blotting removes liquid; wiping can push it into ports and gaps. Do not apply heat. Do not use a hairdryer. Do not put it in rice. Then bring it to either our Underwood or Sunnybank Hills store as soon as possible — WhatsApp us on the way so we’re ready to assess on arrival.

❌ Do NOT Turn It On Again — Under Any Circumstances

This is the single most damaging thing you can do after a liquid spill. “I’ll just quickly check if it still works” — even 30 seconds of power with liquid on the board can destroy components that would otherwise have been perfectly repairable. Even after the laptop has been sitting for hours and appears dry, the corrosive mineral residue from tap water remains on the board and is still conductive. Do not power on the laptop until a technician has inspected and cleaned the board.

❌ Do NOT Use a Hairdryer or Any Heat Source

Heat accelerates corrosion rather than stopping it. Hot air also pushes liquid deeper into components and can warp or melt delicate connectors. Do not use a hairdryer, heat gun, oven, or any other heat source. If you want to use airflow — a room-temperature fan blowing gently around the laptop is acceptable, but heat is not.

❌ Do NOT Put It in Rice

The rice myth is persistent but false. Rice cannot absorb moisture from inside a laptop’s sealed circuitry at any meaningful rate. The damage-causing moisture is inside the board — under chips, in solder joints, and between component leads — not floating freely in the air where rice could absorb it. Additionally, rice starch and fine particles can enter through ports and vents and cause additional problems. If you have silica gel packets available they are marginally better at absorbing ambient moisture, but neither replaces professional board cleaning.

❌ Do NOT Shake the Laptop

Shaking the laptop spreads liquid from the area where it entered to areas it hasn’t reached yet. A spill that entered only at the keyboard can reach the motherboard if the laptop is shaken. Keep it stable in the drain position — tilted keyboard-down — and avoid all movement that could spread liquid further inside the chassis.

WhatsApp us as you’re on the way: Send us your laptop model and what was spilled on the way to the store and we’ll be prepared to assess it the moment you arrive. Both stores are walk-in — no appointment needed, any day of the week.
⚠️ The Hidden Danger

“It Seems Fine” — Why a Laptop That Works After a Spill Still Needs Professional Attention

This is the most important piece of information on this page — and the one most people don’t know until it costs them an expensive repair weeks later.

🔬 What Happens Inside the Board After Liquid Dries

Tap water contains dissolved minerals — calcium, magnesium, sodium, and other compounds from Brisbane’s water supply. When the water evaporates from inside the laptop, it leaves those minerals behind as a microscopic residue coating the circuit board’s components, solder joints, and conductive traces.

That mineral residue is conductive. It creates low-level electrical pathways between components that shouldn’t be connected. These cause ongoing micro-shorts that gradually degrade capacitors, resistors, and connectors — not all at once, but progressively. The laptop works fine, then starts having intermittent faults (screen flickering, keyboard keys misbehaving, WiFi dropping out), then fails more persistently, and eventually stops working altogether.

This progression can take anywhere from a few days to several months after the initial spill. By the time the faults appear, the corrosion has advanced significantly beyond what it was immediately after the spill — making the eventual repair more complex and expensive.

☕ Sugary and Acidic Liquids Are Far Worse Than Water

Coffee, tea, juice, soft drinks, and alcohol leave a highly conductive, sticky residue that corrodes board contacts far more aggressively than tap water. The sugar content makes the residue much harder to remove and keeps it conducting even as it dries. A coffee spill that “seems fine” after drying is often the source of a serious board fault weeks later — the sticky conductive residue is still there, still corroding, still causing low-level shorts. Professional board cleaning after any sugary liquid spill is strongly recommended even when the laptop appears to be working normally.

✅ The Professional Clean Prevents the Expensive Repair

A professional isopropyl alcohol board cleaning removes the mineral and residue deposits before they cause progressive damage. This is a preventive service — done when the laptop appears fine — that costs significantly less than the component-level board repair that becomes necessary if the residue is left to corrode. If your laptop had a liquid spill and appears to be working, a board inspection and clean is the most cost-effective thing you can do right now.

Liquid Type Matters

Not All Spills Are Equal — The Liquid Type Determines How Urgently You Need to Act

Different liquids cause different types and rates of damage. Here’s what was spilled on your laptop and how urgent your response needs to be:

🔵 Least Damaging

Water (Tap or Bottled)

Water is non-conductive in its pure form — the problem is the dissolved minerals in tap water that remain after drying. Bottled water is slightly better than tap but still leaves residue. If the laptop was powered off immediately and water was the liquid, the prognosis is generally good with fast professional cleaning. Brings it in immediately — do not attempt to turn it on.

🟡 Moderate

Tea (Plain, No Milk)

Slightly more damaging than water due to tannins and any dissolved tea compounds. Plain tea without sugar or milk is manageable with prompt professional cleaning. The same rules apply — power off immediately, don’t turn it on again, bring it in as soon as possible.

🟠 More Damaging

Coffee (With Milk or Sugar)

The most common laptop spill we see — and significantly more damaging than water. Coffee with milk and sugar leaves a sticky, conductive residue that corrodes board contacts aggressively. Even a small amount of coffee in the wrong place causes serious damage. Bring it in immediately. Professional board cleaning is essential even if the laptop appears to work.

🔴 Very Damaging

Soft Drinks, Juice, Energy Drinks

Highly sugary liquids are among the worst for laptop damage. The sugar content makes the residue extremely sticky and highly conductive — it bonds to components and connectors and is very difficult to remove completely even with professional cleaning. The acidity in many soft drinks and juices also accelerates metal corrosion. Bring it in immediately.

🚨 Most Damaging

Beer, Wine, Spirits, Cocktails

Alcohol is one of the most corrosive liquids for electronics. It attacks the protective coatings on PCB traces and dissolves some adhesives used in connectors. The combination of alcohol, sugars, and acids in most alcoholic drinks creates a particularly damaging residue. Treat any alcohol spill as an emergency — power off and bring it in as urgently as possible.

Whatever the liquid — the single most important factor is how quickly you act. A water spill on a powered-off laptop brought in within an hour has a dramatically higher recovery rate than a coffee spill left overnight. Speed is the most important variable regardless of liquid type.
Component Damage Order

Which Laptop Components Get Damaged by Liquid — and in What Order

Liquid follows gravity and enters through the keyboard first. Here’s the typical order in which components are affected — from most to least commonly damaged:

1st
Keyboard
First point of contact for almost all spills. Liquid enters through key gaps and can cause key failures, sticky keys, and short circuits under the keyboard PCB. Often the only component damaged in minor spills caught immediately.
Very High Risk
2nd
Trackpad / Touchpad
Directly beneath the keyboard on most laptops. Liquid running down from the keyboard often reaches the trackpad connector and flex cable. Can cause unresponsive trackpad, phantom clicks, or complete touchpad failure.
High Risk
3rd
Battery
Larger spills that pool inside the chassis can reach the battery. Liquid on a battery’s charge controller or connector causes charging failures and in worst cases a swollen or damaged battery. Batteries do not degrade immediately from contact but corrosion progresses.
Medium Risk
4th
Motherboard / Logic Board
Significant spills or delayed response allows liquid to reach the main board. Motherboard damage is the most expensive to repair and the most likely to be uneconomical to fix on older laptops. Speed of power-off is the biggest determinant of motherboard survival.
Risk Depends on Speed
5th
Display / Screen
Less commonly affected as the screen is largely separate from the keyboard area. However, large spills or bottles leaking inside backpacks can reach display connectors and cause screen failure or flickering. Screen-side liquid damage is relatively uncommon but does occur.
Lower Risk
6th
SSD / Hard Drive
The storage drive — where all your data lives — is the least commonly damaged component in a liquid spill. The drive is usually positioned away from the keyboard area and has its own protective casing. Data recovery is usually possible even when the laptop itself is beyond economical repair.
Lowest Risk

💾 Your Data Is Usually Safe Even in Severe Spills

Because the SSD or hard drive is the component least likely to be affected by a liquid spill, data loss from liquid damage alone is relatively uncommon. Even when the motherboard has severe damage and is uneconomical to repair, the storage drive can usually be removed and data recovered from it separately. We assess data recovery separately from hardware repair and advise on both options — so even in worst-case scenarios, your files are rarely truly lost.

The Myths — Debunked

Four Common Liquid Damage Myths That Will Make Your Problem Worse

There is a lot of bad advice online and from well-meaning people about what to do after spilling liquid on a laptop. Here’s what’s actually true:

❌ Myth

Put It in a Bag of Rice

Rice absorbs ambient atmospheric moisture, not the conductive residue deposited inside the circuit board. The moisture causing laptop damage is inside the board — in solder joints, under chips, between component leads — not floating in the air where rice could reach it. Rice also introduces starch particles and fine dust into your laptop’s ports and vents. No credible electronics technician recommends rice for liquid damage.

✅ Reality

Professional IPA Board Cleaning Is the Only Real Fix

99% isopropyl alcohol dissolves and removes the conductive mineral residue that water and other liquids leave behind on the board. Applied with precision brushes to the affected areas of the board after disassembly — this is the professional cleaning process that actually addresses the damage. Rice does nothing that time alone wouldn’t do, and time without cleaning allows corrosion to progress.

❌ Myth

Use a Hairdryer to Dry It Out

Heat significantly accelerates corrosion on circuit board metals. Hot air also pushes liquid deeper into the chassis and can warp the delicate plastic connectors, melt adhesive joints, and damage the display backlight film. A laptop subjected to hairdryer treatment after a spill is harder to repair than one that was simply left alone. Heat is never the answer for liquid damage.

✅ Reality

Room Temperature Airflow — and Bring It In Immediately

If you want to use airflow, a room-temperature fan blowing gently around the laptop in the open position is acceptable. But the most important action is bringing it to a professional immediately — not waiting for it to “dry out” before seeking help. The professional cleaning needs to happen before the residue has time to corrode the board, not after the visible moisture has evaporated.

❌ Myth

“It Seems Fine — I Don’t Need to Do Anything”

A laptop that works immediately after a spill is not necessarily undamaged. The conductive mineral residue from water and the sticky residue from coffee and other liquids remain on the board after the visible moisture evaporates. This residue continues to cause progressive damage — often manifesting as intermittent faults weeks or months after the spill. “It worked fine” turns into “it started having problems” turns into “it stopped working.”

✅ Reality

A Preventive Board Clean Costs Far Less Than the Eventual Repair

A professional board inspection and IPA clean after a spill — even when the laptop appears to work — removes the residue before it causes progressive damage. This preventive service costs significantly less than the component-level board repair that becomes necessary when corrosion has had weeks to develop. The most expensive liquid damage repairs we see are laptops that “seemed fine” initially but weren’t brought in.

❌ Myth

“I’ll Just Turn It On Quickly to Check If It Still Works”

Powering on a wet or recently-dried laptop is the single most damaging thing you can do after a spill. Even when the visible moisture has evaporated, the conductive residue remains. When current flows through the board, it travels through the residue — across connections that should be isolated — and can burn out capacitors, resistors, or larger chips in seconds that would otherwise have survived the spill unharmed.

✅ Reality

Do Not Power On Until a Technician Clears It

The board must be inspected, cleaned, and confirmed free of residue before the laptop is powered on. A technician can check the board for conductive residue and confirm it’s safe to attempt power-on. This one action — waiting for professional clearance before first power-on — dramatically increases the chance of a full recovery from what would otherwise be a severe board repair.

Delayed Symptoms

Signs Your Laptop Was Liquid Damaged — Even If the Spill Was Weeks Ago

Liquid damage doesn’t always manifest immediately. If your laptop had any liquid exposure and is now showing these symptoms — corrosion is the likely cause:

⌨️

Keyboard keys stopped working weeks after a spill

Specific keys fail, stick, or type wrong characters weeks after what seemed like a minor spill. Corrosion under the keyboard PCB has progressively degraded the key contacts. The keyboard usually needs replacement — but catching it before the corrosion spreads to the motherboard is important.

🔌

Charging stopped working — charger confirmed good

Laptop was charging fine after the spill but has stopped charging weeks later. Corrosion on the charging controller IC or the USB-C / DC charging port contacts has progressed to the point of failure. The charger is fine — the charging circuit on the board has been damaged by delayed corrosion.

📶

WiFi or Bluetooth dropping out intermittently

Wireless connectivity becoming unreliable after a liquid incident is often caused by corrosion on the WiFi card connector or the antenna wire contacts inside the lid. The connection degrades progressively as the corrosion advances.

🖥️

Screen flickering or developing spots after a spill

Liquid that reached the display connector or backlight driver circuit can cause flickering, dark spots, or white blotches on the screen that worsen over time. Often appears weeks after a spill that seemed not to have affected the display at all.

💀

Laptop suddenly stopped turning on — after working fine

The laptop was working normally after the spill, then stopped turning on completely. Progressive corrosion on the power delivery circuit has finally reached a critical component. This is the most expensive outcome — the one that a timely preventive board clean would likely have prevented.

🔋

Battery swelling or rapid drain after liquid exposure

Liquid contact with the battery or its charging controller can cause the battery to swell (a safety concern — bring it in immediately if the bottom of the laptop is bulging) or drain much faster than before. Swollen batteries must be treated as urgent — they present a fire risk if left untreated.

Had a liquid spill at any point in the past few months and now seeing these symptoms? Tell us when the spill happened and what was involved when you come in — this context helps us identify corrosion as the cause rather than chasing other explanations.
Brisbane-Specific

Why Brisbane’s Climate Makes Laptop Liquid Damage More Common — and More Urgent

Brisbane’s warm, humid climate creates specific conditions that make liquid damage both more common and more time-critical than in drier climates.

☀️ Humidity Accelerates Corrosion Significantly

Brisbane’s high humidity — particularly from October through March — means even after visible liquid has evaporated from inside a laptop, the ambient moisture in the air continues to facilitate corrosion on exposed metal traces and contacts. A board that was exposed to liquid and left uncleaned corrodes faster in Brisbane’s humid summer air than it would in a drier climate. This is an additional reason why prompt professional cleaning is especially important for Brisbane laptop liquid damage — the corrosion timeline is compressed by the local climate.

⛈️ Storm Season — Water Bottle Leaks and Rain

Brisbane’s severe summer storm season (October to March) brings another common source of laptop liquid damage that isn’t a traditional “spill.” Water bottles leaking inside backpacks during wet weather commutes, rain entering an open laptop bag, or condensation from moving between air-conditioned buildings and hot humid outdoor air are all regular causes of moisture damage we see particularly from November to February. These exposures are often gradual rather than sudden — and produce the delayed symptom pattern of a laptop that “seemed fine” for weeks before developing faults.

🏢 Home Office and Café Work Culture

With Brisbane’s strong work-from-home and café work culture, laptops are regularly used alongside coffee and drinks in settings where spills are more likely than a traditional office environment. The most common liquid damage scenario we see at our Brisbane stores is a coffee or soft drink knocked onto a laptop on a home desk or café table — often by a partner, child, or pet rather than the laptop owner. If someone else spilled something on your laptop and you weren’t there — the same rules apply: power off, don’t turn it on again, bring it in immediately.

Insurance Claims

Is Your Laptop Liquid Damage Covered by Insurance? — What Brisbane Residents Need to Know

Many Brisbane residents don’t realise their Home and Contents insurance policy covers accidental liquid damage to electronics. Here’s what to check and how we can help with the claims process.

🛡️ Check Your Home and Contents Policy First

Major Australian insurers — NRMA, Suncorp, AAMI, Allianz, and others — commonly include accidental damage to electronics under Home and Contents or Portable Valuables cover. Look for “accidental damage,” “portable valuables,” or “personal effects” in your policy documents. The key question is whether the damage was accidental (unintentional) and occurred to a listed item or category. A laptop used at home or carried regularly as a portable valuable typically qualifies if accidental damage cover is included in the policy.

📋 What Insurers Need — and How We Help

Insurance claims for liquid damage typically require a professional assessment report documenting: the date and cause of damage, the type of liquid involved, which components were affected with supporting photos, a repair cost estimate from a qualified technician, and a repair vs replacement recommendation with cost comparison.

Mobile Connect Brisbane can provide a documented assessment report with the information insurers need to process a claim. We recommend notifying your insurer before bringing the laptop in — they may have specific requirements for the assessment process or preferred repairers under your policy. Bring your policy number and claim reference when you come in.

⚠️ Important: Don’t Attempt Repair Before Lodging Your Claim

If you intend to make an insurance claim — do not attempt any repair or cleaning before notifying your insurer. Insurers may require an independent assessment of the damage in its as-found condition before approving repair. Starting repair before lodging a claim could complicate the assessment process. Contact your insurer first, get your claim reference, then bring the laptop in for the professional assessment they require.

What We Actually Do

The Professional Liquid Damage Assessment and Repair Process — Step by Step

Here’s exactly what happens when you bring a liquid-damaged laptop to Mobile Connect Brisbane — from arrival to handback.

🔬 Our Assessment and Cleaning Process

Step 1 — Visual inspection: We inspect the exterior for liquid entry points (keyboard, vents, ports) and check the laptop’s internal liquid damage indicator strips where present — some manufacturers install these to confirm liquid exposure.

Step 2 — Full disassembly: The laptop is disassembled to expose the motherboard, keyboard, trackpad, and battery. We inspect each component for visible liquid residue, corrosion (blue-green deposits on copper traces), and short circuit damage (burnt or discoloured components).

Step 3 — Board cleaning with 99% IPA: Affected areas of the motherboard are cleaned with 99% isopropyl alcohol using precision brushes — the same approach used by professional board repair technicians worldwide. The IPA dissolves and removes the conductive mineral residue that plain drying cannot address. Connector contacts and ribbon cable ends receive special attention.

Step 4 — Component assessment: After cleaning, we assess each component individually. Keyboard checked for key function. Trackpad tested. Battery tested for charge retention and swelling. Motherboard inspected under magnification for remaining corrosion and component damage.

Step 5 — Honest viability assessment and quote: After the assessment we tell you exactly what was damaged, what can be repaired, what the cost is, and whether repair is economically worthwhile for your specific laptop and the extent of damage. If repair is not viable, we advise on data recovery options from the storage drive.

All Liquid Damage Services

Every Laptop Liquid Damage Service We Offer in Brisbane

From an emergency preventive clean to full component replacement — here’s the complete range at both our Brisbane stores:

Emergency

Emergency Liquid Damage Assessment

Walk-in, no appointment needed. We prioritise liquid damage cases because of the time-sensitive nature of the damage. The laptop is assessed on arrival — disassembled, inspected for liquid entry path and component exposure, and the specific damage documented. This emergency assessment is always free. WhatsApp us as you’re on the way so we’re prepared on arrival.

Cleaning

Professional Board Cleaning — IPA Wash

For laptops with liquid exposure — even those that appear to work normally — professional isopropyl alcohol board cleaning removes the conductive mineral and organic residue that causes progressive corrosion. This preventive service is the most cost-effective liquid damage intervention and the one most likely to prevent more expensive board-level repairs developing later. Done after disassembly and before the first power-on attempt.

Keyboard Repair

Keyboard Replacement

The keyboard is the component most commonly damaged by liquid spills — usually the first affected and sometimes the only component requiring replacement if the laptop was powered off quickly. We replace the entire keyboard assembly with a correctly-matched replacement for your laptop model. For minor spills where only a few keys are affected, we assess whether a targeted fix is possible before recommending full replacement.

Components

Trackpad, Battery and Port Repair

For liquid damage that extends beyond the keyboard — trackpad replacement for unresponsive or phantom-clicking pads, battery replacement if the battery has been exposed and shows degraded performance or swelling, and charging port cleaning or replacement if corrosion has reached the port contacts. These are the next most commonly affected components after the keyboard.

Board Repair

Motherboard Component-Level Repair

For liquid that reached the motherboard and caused component damage — corrosion on power delivery components, failed capacitors, or damaged charging controller ICs — we perform targeted component-level repair after the board cleaning. This is more cost-effective than full motherboard replacement for isolated component faults, and we always quote both options honestly after the assessment.

Data Recovery

Data Recovery from Liquid-Damaged Laptops

When a laptop is too severely damaged to repair economically, the storage drive is often intact and data recovery is possible. We assess the drive separately from the hardware assessment and advise on data recovery options. Even when the laptop cannot be economically repaired, recovering your files from the drive is usually achievable and is always assessed as part of the liquid damage evaluation.

How It Works

Liquid Damage Repair at Mobile Connect Brisbane — What to Expect

From the moment you walk in to the moment you walk out — here’s the complete process.

1

Walk In Immediately — No Appointment Needed, Any Day

Come straight to either our Underwood Marketplace or Sunnybank Hills Shopping Town store. Liquid damage is treated as priority — walk in and tell us you have a liquid-damaged laptop. WhatsApp us on the way with your laptop model and what was spilled — we’ll be ready to start the assessment immediately on arrival. Do not delay by calling ahead for an appointment.

2

Free Immediate Assessment — Liquid Entry and Component Inspection

We disassemble the laptop, identify the liquid entry path, inspect each component for residue and corrosion damage, and document the assessment. For insurance claims, we photograph the damage at this stage for the assessment report. This initial assessment is always free and confirms which components were affected and the extent of the damage before any paid work is discussed.

3

Board Cleaning — Before First Power-On

Before attempting to power on the laptop, we perform the IPA board cleaning to remove conductive residue. Attempting power-on before cleaning risks burning out components that the cleaning would have saved. The cleaning is done first — then the board is inspected after cleaning to assess which components may need replacement.

4

Honest Quote — Repair, Replace, or Data Recovery

After the assessment and cleaning, we give you a clear quote covering: what was damaged, what we recommend repairing, the repair cost, and an honest assessment of whether repair is economically worthwhile. For severe damage, we also quote the data recovery option separately from the hardware repair — because often recovering your data is the priority even when the laptop itself is beyond economical repair.

5

Repair Completed — Full Functional Test Before Handback

After the repair, we test the laptop comprehensively: boot, display, keyboard, trackpad, battery charging, all ports, and WiFi. We confirm the laptop is fully functional before handback. For liquid damage repairs, we advise on preventing future incidents and note any areas of the board where minor residue may have been present that should be monitored over the following weeks.

Got Questions?

Laptop Liquid Damage Brisbane — FAQ

The questions we hear most often about liquid damage. Not listed? WhatsApp us — we reply fast.

What should I do immediately if I spill liquid on my laptop?

In this exact order: (1) Hold the power button for 10 seconds — do not hesitate, do not save your work first. (2) Unplug the charger. (3) Tilt the laptop keyboard-side down to let gravity drain visible liquid. (4) Blot surface liquid gently with a dry cloth — do not wipe, do not apply heat. (5) Do not attempt to turn it on again under any circumstances. (6) Bring it to Mobile Connect Brisbane immediately — either Underwood Marketplace or Sunnybank Hills Shopping Town. WhatsApp us as you’re on the way.

The most damaging things you can do: leaving it powered on, turning it on again to check if it works, using a hairdryer, or putting it in rice. All four of these make the situation significantly worse.

Can a liquid-damaged laptop be repaired?

In many cases, yes — particularly if the laptop was powered off immediately and brought in quickly. The repairability depends on: how quickly it was powered off (the single most important factor), what liquid was spilled (water is least damaging, alcohol and sugary drinks are most), how much liquid entered, and how quickly it was brought in for professional cleaning.

Laptops brought in within a few hours with immediate power-off have a significantly higher recovery rate than those that were left overnight, turned on again, or treated with hairdryers. Even severe liquid damage cases can often have data recovered from the storage drive even when the hardware repair isn’t economical.

Does putting a laptop in rice work?

No. Rice absorbs ambient atmospheric moisture — it cannot absorb the conductive residue deposited inside the circuit board by water, coffee, or other liquids. The damage-causing mineral and organic deposits are inside the board’s component connections, under chips, and between solder joints where rice has no effect. Additionally, rice starch and fine particles can enter laptop ports and vents and cause further problems.

If you have silica gel packets available, they are marginally better at absorbing ambient moisture — but neither replaces the professional IPA board cleaning that removes the actual conductive residue. Bring it in immediately rather than waiting for any home drying method to work.

My laptop works fine after the spill — do I still need to bring it in?

Yes — and this is genuinely important. A laptop that appears fine after a spill has not necessarily escaped damage. Tap water leaves dissolved mineral residue on the board that remains after the water evaporates. This residue is conductive and causes ongoing low-level shorts that progressively degrade components — manifesting as intermittent faults days or weeks later, worsening until the laptop fails.

Coffee, tea, juice, and other liquids leave even more aggressive residue. A professional board inspection and IPA clean after any liquid spill — even when the laptop appears fine — removes this residue before it causes damage. This preventive service costs significantly less than the board-level repair that typically becomes necessary if the residue is left to corrode.

Will I lose my data if my laptop has liquid damage?

In most cases, no. The SSD or hard drive is the component least commonly affected by liquid spills — it’s positioned away from the keyboard entry point and has its own protective casing. Even when the motherboard has severe corrosion damage, the storage drive is usually intact and data can be recovered from it separately.

We assess data recovery separately from hardware repair. If the laptop is beyond economical repair, recovering your files from the drive is almost always the next step — and is usually achievable. Losing data from a liquid spill is significantly less common than most people expect.

Is liquid damage covered by insurance in Brisbane?

Many Home and Contents insurance policies cover accidental liquid damage to electronics under accidental damage or portable valuables cover. Major Australian insurers including NRMA, Suncorp, AAMI, and Allianz commonly include this. Check your policy documents for “accidental damage” cover and whether laptops are listed as covered items.

Important: notify your insurer before bringing the laptop in if you intend to claim — they may have specific requirements for the assessment process. Mobile Connect Brisbane can provide documented assessment reports with photographs, component damage descriptions, and repair versus replacement cost estimates in the format insurers require.

How long does liquid damage repair take in Brisbane?

The initial assessment is completed on arrival — same day. Board cleaning is typically completed same day.
