How Much Do Telstra NBN Plans Cost?
Telstra’s internet-only NBN plans run from $89 a month for NBN 25 to $129 a month for NBN 1000. Adding the Telstra Smart Modem with 4G backup costs an extra $8 to $14 a month, depending on the plan.
| Telstra Plan | Speed | Internet Only | With Smart Modem |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | NBN 25/5 | $89 | $97 |
| Essential | NBN 50/20 | $99 | $113 |
| Premium | 100/20 (FTTN, FTTC, FTTB) or 500/50 (FTTP, HFC) | $99 | $113 |
| Ultimate | NBN 750/50 | $119 | $129 |
| Ultrafast | NBN 1000/100 | $129 | $139 |
Prices from Telstra’s 1 July 2026 changes, per Telstra’s price change notice. Prices and offers can change, so ask us for today’s price.
💡 A Quirk Worth Knowing
On fibre connections (FTTP or HFC), the Premium plan gives you 500Mbps for the same $99 as the Essential plan’s 50Mbps. Telstra has also limited its Essential plan to connections that can’t get above 70Mbps. If you can get Premium, it’s usually the better buy.
How Much Do Belong NBN Plans Cost?
Belong’s NBN plans start at about $75 a month for NBN 25, with NBN 50 at about $91 and NBN 100 at about $95. All are month-to-month, so there’s no lock-in contract.
| Belong Plan | Speed | Typical Price | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| NBN 25 | 25/5 | ~$75 | One or two light users |
| NBN 50 | 50/17 | ~$91 | Small households and streaming |
| NBN 100 | 100/17 | ~$95 | Families and busy homes |
Standard prices from July 2026, per WhistleOut’s Belong NBN price guide. Belong also offers faster tiers on some fibre connections and sometimes runs intro offers, so ask us what’s available at your address.

⚠️ The Honest Take
If your home is on an older connection type (FTTN, FTTC or FTTB), you’re capped at around 100Mbps, so paying for Telstra’s faster plans won’t help. In that case Belong’s NBN 100 is usually the better value. If you’re on fibre and several people stream, game or work from home, Telstra’s Premium plan is hard to beat.
What NBN Speed Do You Actually Need?
Most households are well served by NBN 50 or NBN 100. Paying for a faster plan than you use is the most common NBN mistake we see.
| Your Household | Speed to Look At | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 people, browsing and streaming | NBN 25 or 50 | Plenty for HD video, email and video calls |
| 3–4 people, several devices | NBN 100 | Handles multiple streams and downloads at once |
| Work from home, gaming, big downloads | NBN 500 or faster (fibre) | Faster uploads and downloads, and less slowing at peak times |
| Large household or home business | NBN 500, 750 or 1000 (fibre) | Room for many heavy users at the same time |
The speed on the box isn’t what you’ll see at 8pm. Telstra publishes typical evening speeds for each plan, and the ACCC’s Measuring Broadband Australia reports show what customers actually get. We’ll talk you through the realistic numbers for your plan.
What Type of NBN Connection Do You Have?
The type of NBN connection at your address decides the fastest speed you can get. You can check yours on NBN Co’s address checker, or just tell us your address and we’ll look it up.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does NBN internet cost in Australia in 2026?
Most NBN plans cost between about $75 and $130 a month on ongoing prices. Telstra’s internet-only plans run from $89 (NBN 25) to $129 (NBN 1000) a month, and Belong’s start at about $75 for NBN 25 and $95 for NBN 100. Many providers advertise cheaper first-6-month prices, so always check the price after the offer ends.
What NBN speed do I need?
Most households do well on NBN 50 or NBN 100. One or two people streaming and browsing are fine on NBN 50, a family of three or four usually suits NBN 100, and heavy users who game, work from home or download large files should consider NBN 500 or faster, which needs a fibre connection.
Is Telstra or Belong better for NBN?
Belong is usually cheaper, while Telstra offers more speed tiers and a modem with 4G backup. Belong suits people who want a simple, lower-priced plan and are happy managing it online, while Telstra suits people who want faster plans, backup connectivity and Telstra’s own support. We can compare both for your address.
Does Boost offer NBN?
Boost Mobile announced a Boost Broadband NBN service in 2024, but it is mainly known for prepaid mobile. For home NBN, we usually recommend Telstra or Belong, so ask us what is available today.
Do I need to buy a modem for NBN?
Not always. Some plans include a modem and some are bring-your-own. Telstra’s bundle plans include the Telstra Smart Modem with 4G backup for a few dollars more per month, while internet-only plans expect you to use your own compatible modem.
What is the difference between FTTP, HFC and FTTN?
These are the types of NBN connection. FTTP (fibre to the premises) and HFC (cable) can reach the fastest speeds, up to 1000Mbps, while FTTN, FTTC and FTTB connections are usually limited to about 100Mbps. You can check your address on NBN Co’s website, or we can check it for you.
How do I switch my NBN provider?
Choose your new plan first, then let the new provider arrange the switch. Do not cancel your old plan until your new service is ready, or you may be left without internet. Most switches on an active connection are quick, and we can walk you through it.
What should I do when I move house?
Contact us as early as you can, ideally a few weeks before you move. A new address may need a new connection or a technician visit, which can take longer than a simple switch. Tell us your new address and we will check which plans are available.
Is 5G home internet a good alternative to NBN?
It can be, especially if your NBN is slow or you rent short-term. Telstra’s 5G home internet plans are priced from $70 a month, but speeds depend on your local 5G signal. We can help you work out whether NBN or 5G suits your home.
