Diagnose First — This Matters

“Not Connecting to WiFi” vs “Connected but No Internet” — These Are Completely Different Problems

Before bringing your laptop in, it’s worth understanding which situation you’re actually in — because the solution is completely different. This single distinction determines whether it’s a laptop problem or a router/NBN problem.

📶 Situation 1: Laptop can’t see any WiFi networks — or sees them but won’t connect

The laptop’s wireless adapter is not functioning correctly, or a setting is preventing it from working. This IS a laptop problem. Check whether Airplane Mode is accidentally on. If that’s not it — this is what needs professional diagnosis. The WiFi adapter, driver, or antenna is likely the issue.

🌐 Situation 2: Connected to WiFi but no internet access

“Connected” with a yellow exclamation or “No Internet” message means the laptop successfully connected to your router — but the router can’t reach the internet. Test immediately: try loading a website on your phone using the same WiFi. If your phone also has no internet — the problem is your NBN connection or router, not the laptop at all. Restart the router (unplug for 30 seconds) and check if your NBN provider has an outage. If your phone works fine but the laptop doesn’t — come in, because the laptop has a DNS or network stack issue that needs diagnosis.

🔌 Situation 3: Can’t connect to 5GHz but can connect to 2.4GHz

Some older laptops have WiFi adapters that only support 2.4GHz — they cannot see 5GHz networks at all. If your router broadcasts separate 2.4GHz and 5GHz network names and your laptop can only connect to the 2.4GHz one, the WiFi adapter doesn’t support 5GHz. This is a hardware limitation, not a fault — but it can be resolved by upgrading the WiFi card to a dual-band model. If the laptop used to connect to 5GHz and now can’t, the 5GHz band on your router may have been disabled, or the WiFi card has partially failed.

Still not sure which situation you’re in? WhatsApp us a description of exactly what you’re seeing — we’ll tell you whether it’s a laptop issue or a router issue before you make the trip.
WiFi Symptoms

Signs Your Laptop Has a WiFi Problem That Needs Professional Attention

WiFi problems range from simple settings issues to hardware failures. Here are the most common symptoms — and what each one typically means:

WiFi adapter completely missing — no WiFi icon at all

No WiFi icon in the taskbar, no wireless adapter in Device Manager, and the laptop behaves as if it has no wireless capability. The WiFi card has failed, a driver has crashed and not reloaded, or the physical toggle (some laptops have a hardware switch) is off. Software fix possible — or WiFi card replacement needed.

🔍

Can’t see any WiFi networks — empty list

WiFi icon is present but the list of available networks is empty, or only shows one or two networks when others can see many more. Indicates a failing WiFi card with degraded antenna sensitivity, a disconnected antenna wire, or a driver issue causing the adapter to scan poorly.

🔄

WiFi drops out randomly — disconnects every few minutes

Laptop connects initially but then drops the connection repeatedly. Can be a power management setting putting the adapter to sleep, a failing WiFi card, a loose antenna wire rattling inside the hinge, or a driver compatibility issue (common with Intel AX200 chips on Windows 11 25H2).

🐌

WiFi connected but very slow — much slower than other devices

Other devices on the same network get normal speeds, but this laptop is dramatically slower. Usually caused by a degraded WiFi card running at reduced performance, a driver issue limiting throughput, or — if the laptop only connects to 2.4GHz — a band capability limitation.

✈️

WiFi stopped working after a Windows update

WiFi was working, a Windows update ran, and now it doesn’t. Particularly common with Intel AX200 and AX201 chips after Windows 11 updates that install an incompatible driver version. Usually a driver rollback or reinstall fixes this without any hardware work needed.

🌐

Connected to WiFi but “No Internet” or “No Internet Access”

The WiFi connection shows as active but websites don’t load and the taskbar shows a yellow exclamation or “No Internet” message. Test if your phone has the same problem on the same WiFi. If yes — it’s the router. If no — the laptop has a DNS or network stack issue that needs a software fix.

📍

WiFi only works close to the router — weak signal even nearby

Laptop gets much weaker WiFi signal than other devices in the same location. A disconnected or broken antenna wire inside the laptop is the most common cause — one or both antenna wires attach to the WiFi card and run through the lid hinge, where they can break with repeated opening and closing.

🔵

WiFi disappeared after being dropped or repaired

The laptop was dropped, and WiFi stopped working. Or WiFi stopped working after another technician serviced it. A physical shock can dislodge the WiFi card from its M.2 slot. A previous repair may have reconnected the antenna wires incorrectly or left the card unseated. Often a simple reseat fixes this.

Signs Your Laptop Bluetooth Has a Problem

Bluetooth problems are usually distinct from WiFi — but on most laptops, they share the same card.

🔵

Bluetooth doesn’t appear in Settings at all

Settings → Bluetooth & Devices shows no Bluetooth toggle — as if the laptop doesn’t have it. The Bluetooth driver has failed, the adapter is disabled in Device Manager, or the WiFi/Bluetooth card has failed. Check Device Manager for any device with a yellow warning icon under Bluetooth.

🎧

Bluetooth finds devices but won’t pair

Bluetooth is visible and scanning, but pairing fails or the paired device keeps disconnecting. Usually an issue with the specific device’s pairing state rather than the laptop — try “Forget” the device from both the laptop and the accessory, then re-pair from scratch. If this fails with multiple devices, the Bluetooth driver needs updating.

💤

Bluetooth disappears after sleep or restart

Bluetooth works, the laptop goes to sleep or restarts, and Bluetooth is gone. A power management setting is putting the Bluetooth adapter to sleep and it fails to wake. This is a driver and power management setting fix — not hardware. Very common on Windows 11 after updates.

🔊

Bluetooth audio keeps cutting out or sounds poor quality

Bluetooth headphones or speakers stutter, cut out, or sound low quality. Can be caused by WiFi interference (both operate on 2.4GHz and can conflict), a Bluetooth driver issue, or the laptop being too far from the device. Test closer to the device and check if the issue persists.

Both WiFi and Bluetooth stopped at the same time? On most laptops, WiFi and Bluetooth are on the same card — the M.2 wireless adapter. If both stop simultaneously, the card itself has likely failed and needs replacing. This is one of the most straightforward connectivity repairs we do.
Root Causes

Every Reason a Laptop Loses WiFi Connectivity — Explained

Laptop WiFi failures fall into six distinct categories. Identifying which applies determines whether it’s a free fix or requires hardware replacement.

Settings Issue — Most Overlooked

Airplane Mode or WiFi Toggled Off

Airplane Mode disables all wireless connectivity instantly — and it’s surprisingly easy to activate accidentally via a keyboard shortcut (usually Fn + a function key with an airplane or WiFi icon). WiFi can also be disabled via the Windows quick settings panel or Settings → Network & Internet. These are the first things to check and can be fixed in 30 seconds. Many “my WiFi broke” calls we receive are resolved by this.

Driver Issue — Very Common

Corrupted or Incompatible WiFi Driver

Windows updates frequently install incompatible WiFi driver versions — particularly for Intel AX200, AX201, and AX210 chips on Windows 11. The adapter shows in Device Manager with a yellow warning, or disappears entirely. Symptoms include: WiFi worked before the update, adapter not detected, or random dropouts with “WLAN Extensibility Module has stopped” events in the Windows Event Viewer. Driver rollback or reinstall usually resolves this without any hardware work.

Power Management — Often Missed

Power Management Turning Off the Adapter

Windows allows the system to turn off the WiFi adapter to save power — a setting in Device Manager → Network Adapters → [WiFi Adapter] → Properties → Power Management → “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.” When this is enabled, Windows can disable the WiFi card during low-activity periods, causing apparent WiFi failures that disappear after waking the laptop. This also causes Bluetooth to disappear after sleep. Unchecking this box resolves the issue immediately.

Hardware Failure

Failed WiFi / Bluetooth Card (M.2 Module)

The WiFi card is a small M.2 module that physically sits in a slot on the motherboard. It can fail due to age, a power surge, a drop, or simply reaching end of life. When the card fails — both WiFi and Bluetooth typically disappear simultaneously, or the card drops off and on intermittently. Card replacement with a modern Intel AX210 or equivalent restores full WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2 connectivity. On most laptops this is a 30–45 minute repair.

Antenna Wire Damage

Broken or Disconnected Antenna Wire Inside the Lid

Laptop WiFi antenna wires are thin coaxial cables that run from the WiFi card on the motherboard, up through the lid hinge, to antenna strips embedded in the lid frame. Years of opening and closing the lid flex these wires repeatedly — eventually causing breaks or the tiny IPEX connector detaching from the card. Symptoms: weak WiFi signal despite being near the router, connection only works close to the router, or signal quality dramatically worse than other devices in the same spot. Often fixable without replacing the card itself.

Network Stack Corruption

Corrupted TCP/IP Stack or DNS Settings

The Windows network stack (TCP/IP, Winsock, DNS resolver) can become corrupted after software installation, malware, or failed updates — causing “Connected but no internet” symptoms where WiFi works but websites don’t load. The fix is resetting the network stack via Command Prompt commands (netsh winsock reset, netsh int ip reset, ipconfig /flushdns) — a software procedure that takes a few minutes and requires no hardware work.

Self-Diagnose Before Coming In

The 5-Step Connectivity Test — Know What’s Wrong Before You Arrive

Run through these five steps in order. Each one rules out a possible cause. By the end, you’ll know whether it’s a simple fix, a driver issue, or hardware — and we can confirm on the phone before you come in.

1

Check Airplane Mode and WiFi Toggle

On Windows: click the network icon in the taskbar → confirm Airplane Mode is OFF and WiFi is ON. Or check Settings → Network & Internet → Airplane Mode. On the keyboard: look for an Fn key shortcut with a plane or WiFi icon — try pressing Fn + that key to toggle WiFi back on.

✅ If WiFi comes back after toggling — done. No repair needed. ❌ Still not working? Continue to Step 2.
2

Test With Your Mobile Hotspot

Turn on your phone’s personal hotspot and see if your laptop can detect and connect to it. This isolates whether the problem is with your home router/NBN or with the laptop itself.

✅ Connects to hotspot but not home WiFi — your home router or NBN is the issue. Restart the router. Check for Telstra/Optus NBN outages. ❌ Can’t connect to hotspot either — the problem is in the laptop. Continue to Step 3.
3

Try an Ethernet Cable

Plug in an Ethernet cable directly to your router (or via a USB-C to Ethernet adapter if your laptop has no Ethernet port). Test if internet works over Ethernet.

✅ Ethernet works, WiFi doesn’t — the WiFi adapter is the problem, not the laptop’s internet stack. Likely a driver or hardware issue. ❌ Ethernet also doesn’t work — the network stack may be corrupted, or the fault extends beyond just WiFi. Bring it in.
4

Check Device Manager for the WiFi Adapter

Right-click Start → Device Manager → expand “Network Adapters”. Look for your WiFi adapter (usually Intel, Realtek, or Qualcomm Atheros something).

✅ Adapter is listed with no yellow warning — it’s detected and should work. Try right-clicking → Update Driver → Search Automatically. ❌ Yellow exclamation, red X, or adapter missing entirely — driver failure or hardware fault. This needs professional diagnosis.
5

Restart and Try Forgetting/Reconnecting the Network

Do a full restart (not sleep). After restart, in WiFi settings, find your network → Forget → reconnect from scratch with your password. Also try: Settings → Network & Internet → Advanced Network Settings → Network Reset → Reset Now (this reinstalls all network adapters).

✅ Network Reset resolved the issue — corrupted network stack was the cause. ❌ Still not working after all five steps — the problem is hardware or a deep driver fault. Come in for a free professional diagnosis.
Did you identify the cause? WhatsApp us what you found in Steps 3 and 4 — whether Ethernet worked and whether the adapter shows in Device Manager — and we’ll give you an accurate initial diagnosis before you come in.
Try These First — WiFi

Quick WiFi Fixes to Try at Home Before Coming In

In order of ease. These resolve a significant number of connectivity problems without any hardware repair.

✈️

1. Toggle Airplane Mode Off

Settings → Network & Internet → Airplane Mode → confirm OFF. Also press Fn + F2 (or your model’s WiFi key). This solves more “my WiFi broke” cases than any other fix. Check it even if you’re sure you didn’t enable it — it activates accidentally during typing more often than people realise.

🔄

2. Restart — Properly

A full shutdown and restart (not sleep/hibernate) clears driver states, reloads the network stack, and often restores WiFi that disappeared during a session. Hold Shift while clicking Restart for a “cold” restart that fully reinitialises hardware.

3. Fix Power Management on the WiFi Adapter

Device Manager → Network Adapters → right-click WiFi adapter → Properties → Power Management tab → uncheck “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.” This prevents Windows from disabling the adapter during idle periods. Restart after changing this setting.

🔧

4. Reinstall the WiFi Driver

Device Manager → Network Adapters → right-click WiFi adapter → Uninstall Device → check “Delete the driver software” → confirm. Restart — Windows reinstalls the driver automatically. For best results on Intel chips, download the latest driver directly from Intel’s website before uninstalling the old one.

🌐

5. Reset the Network Stack

Open Command Prompt as Administrator and run these commands in order: netsh winsock reset → Enter, netsh int ip reset → Enter, ipconfig /flushdns → Enter, ipconfig /release → Enter, ipconfig /renew → Enter. Restart after all commands complete.

📡

6. Run the Windows Network Troubleshooter

Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other Troubleshooters → Internet Connections → Run. While basic, it sometimes catches simple configuration issues like disabled adapters or misconfigured IP settings that manual checks miss. Also try the “Network Adapter” troubleshooter in the same menu.

Quick Bluetooth Fixes to Try at Home

Most Bluetooth problems on laptops are software issues. Try these before coming in.

🔵

1. Check Bluetooth Is Enabled

Settings → Bluetooth & Devices → Bluetooth toggle ON. Also check Device Manager → View → Show Hidden Devices and look for any Bluetooth device with a yellow warning icon. Right-click → Enable Device if it’s disabled.

2. Fix Bluetooth Power Management

Device Manager → Bluetooth → right-click your Bluetooth adapter → Properties → Power Management → uncheck “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.” This fixes the very common “Bluetooth disappears after sleep” problem on Windows 11.

🔄

3. Re-pair the Device from Scratch

For a device that won’t pair: Settings → Bluetooth & Devices → find the device → Remove Device. On the accessory, hold its pairing button to put it in discoverable mode. Then pair again from scratch. Most Bluetooth pairing failures are about the accessory’s pairing state, not the laptop.

🔧

4. Reinstall Bluetooth Driver

Device Manager → Bluetooth → right-click Bluetooth adapter → Uninstall Device → Delete the driver software → Restart. Windows reinstalls the Bluetooth driver. For Intel wireless adapters, Bluetooth and WiFi often share the same driver package — reinstalling one reinstalls both.

Tried all of these and still not working? The fault is almost certainly hardware — the WiFi/Bluetooth card needs replacing, or an antenna wire is damaged. Come in for a free diagnosis at either of our Brisbane stores.
Hardware Explained

The Laptop WiFi Card — What It Is, How It Fails, and What Replacement Delivers

Most laptop WiFi problems that survive all the software fixes come down to the physical WiFi card. Here’s what you need to know about it:

📦 What the WiFi Card Actually Is

The WiFi card in most laptops is a small M.2 module — about the size of a stick of gum — that plugs into a dedicated slot on the motherboard. It handles both WiFi and Bluetooth on the same chip. Popular models include Intel AX200 (WiFi 6), Intel AX210 (WiFi 6E), and Realtek RTL8852. Two thin coaxial antenna wires connect from the card and route through the lid hinge to antenna strips embedded in the display lid frame.

⚠️ When the Card Can’t Be Replaced — Important to Know

On most Windows laptops from the past 10 years — Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer — the WiFi card is a replaceable M.2 module that we can swap in 30–45 minutes. However, on some ultra-slim laptops and all recent MacBooks, the WiFi chip is soldered directly to the motherboard. On these models, WiFi card replacement is not possible without board-level repair. We check your specific model during the free diagnosis and tell you honestly which situation applies before recommending anything.

⬆️ WiFi Card Replacement = Opportunity to Upgrade

If your laptop shipped with an older WiFi 5 (802.11ac) card and the card has failed, replacement is an opportunity to upgrade to WiFi 6 (Intel AX200) or WiFi 6E (Intel AX210) at modest additional cost. WiFi 6 delivers significantly faster speeds and better performance in congested environments — apartment buildings, Brisbane CBD — where multiple competing WiFi networks cause interference. If you’re upgrading, the antenna wires on most laptops from the past 5 years are already compatible with WiFi 6 cards.

All Connectivity Services

Every Laptop Connectivity Service We Offer in Brisbane

From a free driver fix to a full WiFi card upgrade — here’s the complete range of what we do at both our Brisbane stores:

Free Diagnosis

WiFi & Connectivity Diagnosis

We run the full diagnostic sequence: Airplane Mode check, Device Manager assessment, driver status, power management settings, antenna connection check, and Ethernet test. We identify exactly what’s causing the connectivity failure and tell you the specific fix — and whether it’s software or hardware — before recommending any paid work. Always free.

Software Fix

WiFi Driver Reinstall & Network Stack Reset

For driver-caused failures — particularly after Windows updates — we reinstall the WiFi and Bluetooth drivers from the correct source (Intel, Realtek, or manufacturer), reset the Windows network stack, and verify connectivity is fully restored. Also includes fixing power management settings that cause adapters to disappear after sleep. Same-day fix, usually within an hour.

Card Replacement

WiFi Card Replacement (Hardware)

For hardware-failed WiFi cards, we replace the M.2 WiFi module with a compatible replacement. We can replace like-for-like or upgrade to a current-generation Intel AX210 WiFi 6E card where compatible — delivering improved speed and range over the original. We confirm compatibility with your specific model before ordering any parts.

Antenna Repair

WiFi Antenna Wire Repair or Reseating

If the antenna wire has disconnected from the card or broken inside the lid hinge, we reseat or replace the antenna wire. This is often the cause of poor WiFi signal or connectivity that only works close to the router — despite the card itself being healthy. Antenna wire replacement requires careful lid disassembly but is frequently cheaper than a full card replacement.

Bluetooth Fix

Bluetooth Diagnosis & Repair

For Bluetooth that doesn’t appear in Settings, disappears after sleep, won’t pair, or produces poor audio quality — we diagnose the specific cause and fix it. Most Bluetooth failures are software (driver, power management, pairing state) and resolved without hardware work. If the Bluetooth chip itself has failed — it’s usually on the same card as WiFi and is replaced together.

Internet Fix

“Connected but No Internet” Fix

For laptops that connect to WiFi but can’t load websites — we identify whether it’s a DNS issue, a corrupted TCP/IP stack, a VPN interference, a firewall blocking internet access, or a router configuration problem (for which we advise the appropriate steps). The network stack reset and DNS flush resolve the majority of these cases without hardware work.

How It Works

Our Laptop Connectivity Diagnosis & Repair Process — Step by Step

Systematic, transparent, and no surprises. Here’s what happens when you bring your laptop to us.

1

Walk In or WhatsApp First — No Appointment Needed

Come to either our Underwood Marketplace or Sunnybank Hills Shopping Town store any day of the week. For a faster experience, WhatsApp us your laptop model, the WiFi/Bluetooth symptom, and what you’ve already tried. We can often give you an initial assessment before you arrive.

2

Free Connectivity Diagnosis — Software Checked Before Hardware

We check settings (Airplane Mode, WiFi toggle, power management), then Device Manager for driver status and adapter detection, then test with a mobile hotspot and Ethernet cable to isolate the fault. We always check software causes before recommending hardware repair — because a driver issue costs far less to fix than a card replacement, and we won’t recommend the more expensive fix when the cheaper one will work.

3

Clear Explanation and Fixed Quote

After the diagnosis we explain exactly what’s causing the connectivity failure — in plain English — and give you a fixed cost quote. If it’s a software fix, we do it immediately. If it’s a hardware fix (card replacement or antenna repair), we confirm parts availability and timeline. You approve everything before we start any paid work.

4

Fix Completed — Connectivity Tested Thoroughly

After the repair, we test WiFi connectivity on multiple networks, confirm Bluetooth detects and pairs with a test device, run a speed test to confirm normal performance, and verify the adapter stays connected through a sleep/wake cycle before handing the laptop back. You leave knowing the fix has been verified — not just assumed.

Got Questions?

Laptop WiFi & Connectivity Repair Brisbane — FAQ

The questions we hear most often. Not listed? WhatsApp us — we reply fast.

Why won’t my laptop connect to WiFi?

Start with the basics: check Airplane Mode (Settings → Network & Internet → Airplane Mode) and confirm WiFi is toggled on. Also try your laptop’s Fn + WiFi key shortcut. These accidentally-activated settings cause a surprising number of apparent “WiFi failures.”

If that’s not it — test with your phone’s mobile hotspot. If your laptop connects to the hotspot but not your home network — it’s a router or NBN issue. If it can’t connect to the hotspot either — the problem is in the laptop. Check Device Manager for the wireless adapter. If it’s missing or has a yellow warning — bring it in for a free diagnosis. The cause is either a driver failure or a hardware fault.

My laptop says “Connected” to WiFi but there’s no internet — what’s wrong?

First test: try a website on your phone using the same WiFi. If your phone also has no internet — it’s your router or NBN connection, not the laptop at all. Restart the router (unplug for 30 seconds, wait 60 seconds, plug back in). Check if your NBN provider has an outage in your area.

If your phone has internet fine but the laptop doesn’t — the laptop’s network stack has a problem. Open Command Prompt as Administrator and run: netsh winsock reset then netsh int ip reset then ipconfig /flushdns — restart after each. If that doesn’t work, bring it in for a free diagnosis.

Why did my WiFi stop working after a Windows update?

Windows updates frequently install incompatible WiFi driver versions — particularly for Intel AX200 and AX201 chips on Windows 11. The most documented issue occurs with Windows 11 25H2 updates where the WiFi adapter drops off intermittently or disappears from Device Manager entirely.

The fix: Device Manager → Network Adapters → right-click the WiFi adapter → Update Driver → Browse for Drivers → Let me pick → select the previous driver version. Alternatively, download the latest stable driver directly from Intel’s website (not Windows Update) and install it manually. If the adapter has completely disappeared from Device Manager — bring the laptop in for a free diagnosis.

Can a laptop WiFi card be replaced?

Yes — on most laptops. The WiFi card in most Windows laptops is a small M.2 module that sits in a dedicated slot and is easily replaced in 30–45 minutes. Most Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, and Acer laptops from the past decade have replaceable M.2 WiFi cards.

The exceptions are some ultra-slim laptops and most recent MacBooks where the WiFi chip is soldered to the motherboard. We check your specific model during the free diagnosis and confirm whether replacement is possible before recommending it. Where replacement is an option, we can also upgrade to a current-generation WiFi 6E card for modest additional cost.

My laptop WiFi keeps dropping out randomly — what’s causing it?

The most common cause of intermittent WiFi dropout is the power management setting — Windows is putting the WiFi adapter to sleep. Fix: Device Manager → Network Adapters → right-click WiFi adapter → Properties → Power Management → uncheck “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.” Restart and test over 24 hours.

If dropouts continue — especially if they started after a Windows 11 update — it’s likely a driver compatibility issue with the Intel AX200 chip. Rolling back or reinstalling the WiFi driver often resolves this. If dropouts happen specifically when moving the lid or laptop — a loose antenna wire inside the hinge is the likely physical cause.

Both my WiFi and Bluetooth stopped working at the same time — is that related?

Yes — this is almost certainly the WiFi/Bluetooth card itself failing. On most laptops, WiFi and Bluetooth are handled by the same M.2 module. When both stop simultaneously, the card has failed (or very occasionally, its driver has completely crashed).

Try: Device Manager → Action → Scan for Hardware Changes. If neither WiFi nor Bluetooth reappear — the card needs replacing. This is one of the most straightforward hardware connectivity repairs: a new M.2 card restores both WiFi and Bluetooth simultaneously, typically in under an hour at our Brisbane stores.

Why does my laptop get much weaker WiFi signal than other devices nearby?

Dramatically weaker WiFi signal compared to other devices in the same location is almost always caused by a disconnected or broken antenna wire inside the laptop. The WiFi antenna wires are thin coaxial cables that run from the WiFi card through the lid hinge to antenna strips in the display lid. These wires can disconnect from the card’s tiny IPEX connectors or break inside the hinge after years of lid opening and closing.

A single disconnected antenna wire reduces signal strength significantly. A broken wire stops that antenna entirely. Reconnecting or replacing the antenna wire restores normal signal without replacing the card — and is often less expensive than a full card replacement. Bring it in for a free diagnosis and we’ll confirm whether it’s the antenna or the card itself.
