Is This Your Phone?

Signs Your Phone Sensor Needs Professional Attention

Sensor problems are often subtle — they don’t break the phone outright, but they make daily use frustrating. Here are the most common signs we see at our Brisbane stores:

📞

Screen stays on during phone calls

The screen should turn off when you hold the phone to your ear. If it stays on, you’re accidentally pressing things with your cheek. The proximity sensor isn’t detecting your face — it needs diagnosis.

🔓

Face ID shows “not available” or won’t recognise face

Face ID was working fine and suddenly fails with an error message, or it just doesn’t recognise your face anymore. Can be a software glitch — or damage to one of the TrueDepth sensor components.

👆

Fingerprint sensor won’t read your finger

You press your finger to the scanner and it fails repeatedly, takes multiple attempts, or the fingerprint option has disappeared from Settings entirely. Physical damage, moisture, or a screen protector may be blocking it.

☀️

Auto-brightness behaving erratically

Screen suddenly goes very bright or very dim at random, or auto-brightness doesn’t respond to lighting changes at all. The ambient light sensor — usually located near the front camera — is likely faulty or blocked.

🔄

Screen rotation not working correctly

The screen should rotate when you turn the phone sideways. If it doesn’t rotate, rotates at the wrong time, or is stuck in landscape/portrait, the accelerometer or gyroscope sensor may have failed.

🧭

Maps or navigation pointing the wrong direction

GPS or navigation apps showing inaccurate heading, the compass is wrong, or the phone doesn’t orient itself correctly in maps. Can indicate a faulty gyroscope, compass, or GPS receiver.

📲

Sensor issues appeared after a screen repair elsewhere

Had a screen replaced somewhere else and now the proximity sensor, Face ID, or auto-brightness doesn’t work? The sensor assembly may not have been transferred correctly during the screen replacement. We can assess and fix this.

💧

Sensor stopped working after water exposure

Moisture damage to the thin flex cables connecting sensors to the logic board is a common cause of sensor failure — especially proximity sensor and ambient light sensor issues after the phone gets wet.

Not sure which sensor is causing the problem? Bring it in. Our free diagnosis tests all key sensors and identifies the exact fault before we recommend anything.
Every Sensor Covered

Every Phone Sensor We Diagnose and Repair in Brisbane

Modern smartphones are packed with sensors — here’s what each one does and what we can do when it fails.

Proximity Sensor

Proximity Sensor Repair

Detects when the phone is close to your face during a call and automatically turns the screen off to prevent accidental touches. When it fails, the screen stays on during calls or turns off when it shouldn’t. We repair and replace proximity sensor components and flex cables for all major brands.

Face ID (iPhone)

Face ID Sensor System Repair

iPhone’s Face ID uses a TrueDepth camera system — including an infrared camera, dot projector, and flood illuminator — that together create a 3D map of your face. Any damage or misalignment of these components causes Face ID to fail. We assess which component is at fault and advise on the most appropriate repair path.

Fingerprint Sensor

Fingerprint Sensor Repair

Touch ID (iPhone and some Android) and in-display fingerprint sensors (Samsung, Oppo, Pixel) can fail due to physical damage, moisture, incompatible screen protectors, or worn flex cables. We repair capacitive side-mounted sensors, rear-mounted sensors, and in-display optical/ultrasonic sensors across all major brands.

Ambient Light Sensor

Ambient Light Sensor Repair

Controls automatic screen brightness based on your environment. Located near the front camera and earpiece, it can be blocked by a screen protector, damaged by a drop, or fail due to moisture. When it fails, auto-brightness stops working or behaves erratically — often going too bright outdoors or too dim indoors.

Motion Sensors

Accelerometer & Gyroscope Repair

The accelerometer detects device orientation and motion — controlling screen rotation, step counting, and shake-to-undo. The gyroscope enables more precise motion tracking for gaming, AR apps, and image stabilisation. When these fail, screen rotation stops working, AR features malfunction, and gaming controls become unreliable.

Barometer & Compass

Barometer, Compass & GPS Issues

The compass and GPS receiver are critical for accurate navigation. A faulty compass causes maps to show the wrong heading. Barometer issues can affect altitude readings and weather apps. While GPS is often software-related, hardware faults in the GPS antenna or compass chip do occur — especially after drops or water exposure.

How Face ID Works

How iPhone Face ID Actually Works — and Why It’s Complex to Repair

Face ID is one of the most sophisticated biometric systems on any consumer device. Understanding how it works helps explain why it fails — and why getting the repair right matters so much.

1

Flood Illuminator

An invisible infrared light that illuminates your face in the dark. The first step in every Face ID scan. If damaged, Face ID fails in low light or all the time.

2

Dot Projector

Projects over 30,000 invisible infrared dots onto your face to create a precise depth map. The most complex component — any physical damage causes Face ID to fail entirely.

3

Infrared Camera

Reads the reflected dot pattern to build a 3D model of your face. Works in conjunction with the dot projector — both must function perfectly for Face ID to work.

4

Front Camera

Captures the visible-light image. Used for Portrait Mode selfies and assists Face ID in normal lighting. If damaged, Face ID may still work but visual quality suffers.

5

Proximity Sensor

Also part of the TrueDepth cluster — detects when the phone is near your face. Failure causes the screen to stay on during calls, independent of Face ID functionality.

⚠️ Why Face ID Fails After a Screen Replacement

Face ID fails after screen repair more often than people expect. The TrueDepth sensor assembly sits behind the display and must be carefully transferred from the original screen to the replacement — it cannot simply be left behind. Many budget repair shops skip this step or damage the fragile flex cables during the transfer, causing Face ID to fail post-repair. If your Face ID stopped working after a screen replacement done elsewhere, bring it to us for an assessment — we can evaluate whether the sensor assembly was transferred correctly and advise on the best path forward.

🔒 Unlike Touch ID — Face ID Components Are Less Strictly Paired

Unlike the iPhone home button’s Touch ID (which is cryptographically paired to one specific logic board), Face ID components are not as strictly paired in the same way — meaning a skilled technician can sometimes reassemble or repair the Face ID system without permanently disabling it. However, this requires the original sensor assembly and precise workmanship. We’ll always give you an honest assessment of what’s achievable in your specific situation.

Know Your Fingerprint Sensor

Three Types of Fingerprint Sensors — and How Each One Fails

Not all fingerprint sensors are the same. The type in your phone affects both how it fails and how it can be repaired. Here’s a plain-English breakdown:

Capacitive

Capacitive Fingerprint Sensor

Uses tiny electrical capacitors to map the ridges and valleys of your fingerprint. The most common and reliable type — generally side-mounted (power button) or rear-mounted. Can fail due to physical damage, moisture, or a worn flex cable connection.

📱 Found in: iPhone (Touch ID — home button & side button), older Samsung Galaxy, Oppo, Xiaomi, Vivo rear sensors

Optical

Optical In-Display Fingerprint Sensor

Uses the phone’s OLED display to illuminate your finger and a camera beneath the screen to photograph your fingerprint pattern. More susceptible to screen protector interference — incompatible protectors are the number one cause of failure for this type.

📱 Found in: Samsung Galaxy S and A series (mid-range), Oppo Reno series, some Google Pixel models

Ultrasonic

Ultrasonic In-Display Fingerprint Sensor

Uses ultrasonic sound waves to create a 3D map of your fingerprint — works even with wet fingers and through most screen protectors. More reliable than optical but more expensive to repair when the sensor module itself fails physically.

📱 Found in: Samsung Galaxy S21, S22, S23, S24 and Z Fold/Flip series

💡 Screen Protector Causing Fingerprint Failure? Try This First

Before coming in, remove your screen protector completely and test the fingerprint sensor without it. Optical in-display sensors in particular are extremely sensitive to screen protector type, thickness, and coverage of the sensor area. Many “fingerprint sensor failures” we see are actually screen protector incompatibility issues — easily resolved by removing the incompatible protector and fitting a purpose-designed one for your specific phone model.

Try These First

Before You Come In — Quick Things to Try at Home

Many sensor problems have surprisingly simple fixes. Try these before making the trip — they resolve the issue more often than you’d expect.

🔄

1. Restart Your Phone

A software glitch after an update can cause proximity sensor, Face ID, and auto-brightness issues that clear after a full restart. This is always the first thing to try — it fixes sensor problems more often than people expect.

🛡️

2. Remove Your Screen Protector

A poorly fitted, too-thick, or incompatible screen protector is the single most common cause of proximity sensor failure and in-display fingerprint failures. Remove it completely and test all sensors bare. If they work without it, the screen protector was the issue.

🧽

3. Clean the Sensor Area

For fingerprint sensors: clean the sensor surface and your fingertip with a dry microfibre cloth, delete existing fingerprints and re-enroll with clean, dry fingers. For proximity sensors: gently clean the area near the earpiece to remove dust or residue blocking the sensor window.

🔓

4. Re-Enroll Your Biometrics

For Face ID: go to Settings → Face ID & Passcode → Reset Face ID → Set Up Face ID. For fingerprint: delete all stored prints and re-enroll from scratch with dry, clean fingers. Sometimes a corrupted biometric profile causes repeated failures even when the hardware is fine.

⚙️

5. Check Auto-Brightness Settings

For auto-brightness issues: go to Settings → Accessibility → Display & Text Size → Auto-Brightness and toggle it off, then back on. Also check that nothing is covering the ambient light sensor area near the earpiece — a case or screen protector edge is often the culprit.

📱

6. Update Your Phone Software

Sensor behaviour is controlled partly by software drivers. A pending software update may contain fixes for known sensor bugs introduced in a previous update. Check Settings → Software Update and install any available updates before concluding it’s a hardware issue.

Still not working after trying these? Then it’s almost certainly a hardware issue that needs professional diagnosis. Come in to either of our Brisbane stores — free check, honest advice, no obligation.

Got Questions?

Phone Sensor Repair Brisbane — Frequently Asked Questions

The questions we hear most often. Not listed? WhatsApp us — we reply quickly.

Why does my phone screen stay on during calls?

The proximity sensor — located near the earpiece — detects when the phone is held to your face and automatically turns off the screen to prevent accidental touches. If the screen stays on during calls, the proximity sensor isn’t working correctly.

First, remove any screen protector that might be covering the sensor area and clean around the earpiece with a dry cloth. Also check that your phone case isn’t partially blocking the top of the screen. If the problem continues after removing the screen protector and restarting, the proximity sensor hardware needs professional diagnosis. Our free check will confirm the cause.

Why is Face ID not working on my iPhone?

Face ID failures have several potential causes. First, try restarting the phone and then going to Settings → Face ID & Passcode → Reset Face ID → Set Up Face ID to re-enroll your face. Also check that nothing is covering the TrueDepth sensor cluster at the top of the phone — a thick screen protector or camera cover can block the infrared components.

If Face ID shows “Face ID is not available” even after a restart and re-enrollment, it’s a hardware issue — usually a damaged sensor component or a Face ID assembly that wasn’t transferred correctly during a previous screen repair. Bring it to Mobile Connect Brisbane for a free assessment and we’ll explain your options honestly.

Why is my phone’s fingerprint sensor not working?

Start by cleaning the sensor surface and your fingertip with a dry microfibre cloth. Then delete all stored fingerprints and re-enroll from scratch with clean, dry fingers. For in-display sensors, remove your screen protector completely and test without it — incompatible screen protectors are the number one cause of in-display fingerprint failures.

If the fingerprint option has disappeared from Settings entirely, or if the sensor consistently fails after cleaning and re-enrolling, the sensor hardware needs professional diagnosis. Bring it to Mobile Connect Brisbane for a free check.

Can Face ID be repaired by a third-party shop?

Partially — and it depends on why Face ID is failing. Unlike Touch ID (the home button fingerprint sensor), Face ID components are not as strictly cryptographically paired to one specific logic board. In many cases, the issue is that the original Face ID sensor assembly wasn’t properly transferred during a screen replacement elsewhere — and a skilled technician can correct this.

However, if a Face ID component is physically damaged and needs replacing with an aftermarket part, the repair is more complex and the outcome less certain. We always assess your specific situation during the free diagnosis and give you an honest picture of what’s achievable before you commit to anything.

Why does my auto-brightness keep going wrong?

Auto-brightness is controlled by the ambient light sensor, which is located near the front camera and earpiece. When this sensor is blocked or damaged, the screen can behave erratically — going extremely bright, very dim, or not adjusting at all in response to changing light conditions.

First, check that your screen protector isn’t covering the sensor area near the top of the phone. Remove the case and protector, clean the area, and re-enable auto-brightness through Settings → Accessibility → Display & Text Size. If it still behaves erratically after this, the ambient light sensor needs professional assessment.

My screen rotation has stopped working — is that a sensor problem?

Possibly — but first check the basics. On iPhone, swipe down from the top-right corner to open Control Centre and make sure the rotation lock (padlock icon) isn’t enabled. On Android, pull down the notification shade and check for a rotation or auto-rotate toggle.

If rotation lock isn’t the cause, it could be an accelerometer or gyroscope fault — particularly if the issue started after a drop. These sensors are small chips on the logic board that can be dislodged or damaged by impact. Bring it in for a free diagnosis and we’ll confirm whether it’s hardware or a software issue.

How much does phone sensor repair cost in Brisbane?

The diagnosis is always free. Proximity sensor and ambient light sensor repairs start from $59. Fingerprint sensor repair starts from $79 for side or rear-mounted sensors, and from $99 for in-display sensors. Face ID assessment and repair starts from $89 depending on the cause and the device model.

We always confirm the exact cost after the free diagnosis and before starting any work. No fix, no fee — if we can’t repair your sensor, you don’t pay for the attempt.
